Need to BORROW left hand drill bits

Postby akaFrankCastle » Tue Mar 17, 2015 8:20 pm

Anyone happen to have a set of good quality (read: NOT Harbor Freight) left hand drill bits? If so, I need to borrow them for an hour or two (hopefully). Not particularly interested in easy outs or other bolt extraction systems, but thanks.

Optimal time to borrow them would be this weekend (in case you're coming to breakfast from up north).

Oh, about the size of the bolt that holds a crankshaft main cap into the bottom of a 350 SBC block and smaller. I'll get you a measurement in just a sec.

Need to buy a new torque wrench. Need left hand drill bits in the size of a crankshaft bolt. I'm starting to solve this puzzle Dr. Watson.

The piece of the puzzle that does not fit is the 'C' in 'SBC'.

I broke one of those in a 302 once. Miss-read the torque spec from a 351w. It came right out though.

Chevy. Replacing a rear main seal for a friend with a K5. A combination of crappy torque wrench and main cap bolts that I am sure we're reused during a rebuild.

That's encouraging. It'd be nice to have my driveway clear and one less vehicle on the property. I'm just hoping to not have to fight the remainder in there.

So this is what I did in a similar situation since I never have good luck drilling out broken bolts...

Drill a hole in the broken bolt head
Spray the hole with plastidip
Drills small shallow hole in the broken shaft
Hold the bolt head up against the broken bolt
Weld the two together from the inside

Sounds retarded but it works. Stick welder is easier than mig, but I have done both

Not going to work in this case. I'm dealing with 2-3" of broken bolt with about 1-1.5" of threaded broken shaft in the block. That shaft that is broken in the block is recessed about .75-1" into the block.

The bolt broke with only about 50ftlbs being exerted on it, so I don't anticipate it being too difficult to break loose. It's simply the recession and moderate amount of torque provided that pose the current issue.

Wound up ordering a set of bits. Which was a waste of time. The threaded stub came out with a flat blade screwdriver. Guess I have bits for another day.
