looking for heat treating

Postby Dirtheadz » Thu Feb 18, 2016 12:49 pm

Anyone do (or have access to) Heat treating? I have a couple knife blanks Im building from 440c stainless, looking to get 58-60 Rockwell. I have a small forge but unsure of temp it produces. From what I've read 440c needs to be in a heat-treat bag at 1900* for 30 min. There are vendors I could ship to and from, but just thought I would throw it out their. Let me know.

Try calling the School of Mines metallurgy department. I'm thinking a grad student might need a project.

Qualtek up on N Nevada, near Predator can do that. Not free, but possibly pretty inexpensive if they have another run of similar properties to do. I had a bunch of D20 spud shafts annealed and heat treated there a few years back. IIRC if was @$60 per process??
