Pop Up Bronco Camper

Postby Kinder » Sat Nov 03, 2012 7:02 am

A lot of you know I had been looking for a Bronco camper and it’s time to confess that I have one. This was originally on Shawn’s Junk Yard Dog that he and I looked at almost two years ago. I tried to buy it back then but the owner and I couldn’t agree on terms, so after my deployment I reengaged him, agreed on a price and hauled it to storage in the dark so no sharp eyed Bronco owners would catch me. It has sat idle since then, waiting for its grand unveiling, which wasn’t going to be until next year after I stretched my Bronco, but a opportunity to go hunting with friends this fall and not freeze in a tent spurred me to get it going.

There are many things I need to do so it’s finished; interior, heater and fresh water storage are on the top of my list. I’ve already upgraded to a real frig instead of the cooler it came with, upgraded the propane lines, added the front camper jack plates (rears are a bit more complicated, but they will installed eventually) and rerouted the electrical to a hitch plug like modern RVs use. The end plan is to have a camper that is easily removable so a built in floor is in my future and changing the attachment from bolts to turnbuckles. I was initially disappointed that it wasn’t in great condition, but now that I’ve had the chance to modify some items I can see the potential to make it more usable through improvements in material and modern components. Also with a stretched frame in my future I want to be able to close the tailgate and reinstall my tire and gear carrier on the bumper and gain my departure angle back.

On to the pics.

I knew you had to be up to something. That Bronco camper dropped off people's radars too fast.

So, the plan is to extend the current Bronco to better accommodate the camper? Thinking long bed Bronco or extended cab?

And yes, I am jealous.

Those are pretty cool. I remember walking to school in elementary and there was a guy who owned an EB with camper on the way. I always liked it and I wish I knew what that old boy did with it.

If ask whether I thought I would like the looks, I would have said no. But I hate to admit it that is a unique look, dare I say cool looking too.

Funny story, never leave your Bronco out in front of my house too long. Matt came by my place and before he could leave I swindled him out if his mirror extensions so I could see around my camper. He was gracious enough to turn his truck off while I quickly swapped my mirrors for his, lol.

Anything to keep a fellow bronco "er" on the road and safe. Not to mention I have seen Kirk's driving icon biggin !

Really this was just my duty for public safety!

Glad they worked out!

Lessons learned: always park around the corner and never (and I mean never) let Kirk walk you to your bronco banghead !

Very cool Mr. Kirk!

Sounds like a Bronco date rape after school special.

Well...if you are going to bring this back then I think we need a tech article of how you kept those mirrors from shaking and showing the cars behind you having a dance party icon biggin ! And well of course camping and latest update pictures. Just saying!

Way cool!!
I remember looking those campers when they were new (yes I've been driving a EB that long). I really wanted one but would not give up the 6 point roll cage in Henry. They could have built one around the cage but it would have been permanent. And that much custom work priced it out of reach.
But still way cool

This what the interior is suppose to look like.

But mine was beyond repair with water damage and neglect so I’ve got a blank slate. All the old press board interior is gone. Plan is to use mostly aluminum and remove obsolete tech. No large interior propane storage or water tank. I’m going with a simple removable stove and water storage. I’ll keep the sink in the new aluminum sandwich counter top and install aircraft storage bins, extend the upper sleeping area and upgrade the bench/lower sleeping to a modern fold over setup. I also need to fix the interior roof and save up some money to replace the insulated canvas.

Pop Up Bronco Camper

Postby Kinder » Sat Jan 13, 2018 7:56 pm

I was able to get a couple items sorted today. Dug out the thrift store Coleman stove, I believe it’s hip to call it vintage, ha. Got the sink position cut out and mocked in, mounted the original table and resized the original bench cushions for temporary use until I replace them. The previous owner had used some diamond plate in a few places so I’m reusing what I can. I’m not a fan but I think a nice coat of paint will make it less 80’s.

Pop Up Bronco Camper

Postby Kinder » Sun Jan 14, 2018 9:09 am

As far as I know they were purpose but for Classic Broncos, the Scout II, 70’s full size trucks, full-size Broncos and early Blazers. Mine is a 1972 built in Denver when the company was owned locally. The business was sold and new owners moved it to California. The original owner’s son is the current owner of Phoenix Campers and is still producing pop-ups in Colorado.
