I bought all new lifters for my build. You probably know how to do it but here is a link I found useful. It's how to check pushrod length. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=5MjAxnGeGKw |

Pull one that's the correct length and one that's loose. Measure them. If the same I'd say you have some lifters that are collapsed. Did you soak the new lifters in a bucket of oil? Pump them up? Prime the oil system before starting? |

If you didn't prime the engine before starting it the lifters will scream for a bit. That hour soak won't do much. It'll take a little while before they get pumped up enough to not clatter. Fire it up and let run for a bit, they'll quiet down. |

Its on a harley but works for all hydraulic lifters. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g84UKZg8zZk If these are pedistal rockers they are not adjustable. if they are stud mounted then the loose pushrods should have the lash adjusted. |

they are pedestal rockers. So how long should I expect to run the motor to get the lifters to prime themselves ? |

Could be less than a minute or it could be 10. Or, to be safe, you could pop the distributer out(cam sensor if distributerless) and prime the system well before another start up! |

get a primer and pop the cps out. hook it to a good drill. Run it for a while to pump it up. leave the valve cover off and keep checking the "loose" pushrod to see if it tightens up. |

Post subject: | Re: Rox Crusher's 77 sport |
I checked the torque on the rockers and they were all good. I let it idle for almost 20 minutes. It seemed to quiet down some, and while it is still pretty noisy, but it no longer has an erratic sound to it. I'm guessing the lifters are now primed and that the pushrods are now tight. Still noisier than I think they should be so I will probably remove the valve cover again and check for lose ones. |

So, The Bronco Master (not you Shawn) figured out precisely what was needed.........which meant we had to go with push rods that were 60 thoughsanths longer and use a 30 thousandths shim to get the effective length we needed. It now purrs like a roller rocker kitten. Just gotta get the exhaust leak at the passenger side collector sealed up. This is the same place we had trouble on Phil's. Thank you Phil ! |
