Thanks guys! I can assure you that I did return and without any parts falling off. Which was good, because I wasn't sure that would happen. The front suspension needs some spring preload adjustment and may need longer or stiffer springs. The front end is currently sitting about 2" lower than the rear and it's almost riding on the bump stops. An alignment is also badly needed, as the toe is way off. Hopefully that all that and the front bumper mounting can get done this week so I can make the drive to the springs.

Post subject:  Re: Justin's retroactive build thread

I've got my old springs still. They were fairly stiff if you'd like to try them.

Post subject:  Re: Justin's retroactive build thread

I appreciate the offer, but with the switch to coilovers they won't fit. The good news (and part of why I wanted to go with coilovers) is that used springs are about $25 each on ebay.

Thanks! Still not 100% that I'll be there. Tore the front end apart again for alignment, spring adjustment and to shorten the throw on the bump stops. Need to remount the bumper too.

Had to post up some welding porn. Found this very tidy TIG weld inside my bump stops. Someone at Fox has very steady hands, or a very expensive robot. Either way it's pretty.

Got a call from Scott that my block is done. Only had to be bored .020 over, which was surprising given how bad the cylinders looked.

Was this the U-boat engine?

After it sank, maybe. Lots of rust. I guess there's some staining on the #7 cylinder, but it's serviceable.

Picked up the block and build kit today. Can post pics later. Have to say, I'm pretty happy with the parts. It's all USA made stuff. Quick question: For our uses, how do the following cam specs look? RPM range seems perfect.

Advertised Duration Duration @ 0.050" Valve Lift Lobe Basic
Company Part Number Intake Exhaust Intake Exhaust Intake Exhaust Center RPM
Cam Research CR266 266° 266° 210° 210° 0.410'' 0.410'' 109° 1,000 – 4,000

Post subject:  Re: Justin's retroactive build thread

Similar power to an Edelbrock performer cam. Lobe separation is a little low for EFI.

Post subject:  Re: Justin's retroactive build thread

How much more would I get out of a different grind? I'll be using and edelbrock intake and gt40 heads.

Post subject:  Re: Justin's retroactive build thread

lift seems low for that duration. for efi you want lsa to be closer to 114. 210@.050 is good torque. you can even go up to 212@.050 and get the lift up in the 460 range.

I assume this is a flat tappet cam?

Post subject:  Re: Justin's retroactive build thread

Yes, flat tappet. Had planned to go roller, but couldn't turn down a free block.

Post subject:  Re: Justin's retroactive build thread

Finally some time to post up about the Bill Moore run. Overall, went well, and ended up being a great day with an old friend of mine that had flown in from Seattle and a Mazda club buddy that bought a Jeep awhile back. Truck performed great, and uncovered some areas that need a little work. My rear ARB is leaking air badly. Should have replaced the seals while the axle was apart, but it's not the end of the world. Front end still needs to be a little higher to keep it off the bump stops, but that wasn't a surprise either. The major bummer was sliding off the trail while busting through a 2-3' snow drift against a tree and mashing up my passenger's door and a spot on the front fender. It'll need a skin and some paint, but the window closes and the door alignment wasn't affected, so it's just cosmetic. Also ran up to the top of Mt. Evans (where I got appreciative comments from hot wimmins smokin ) and over Guanella pass. Ended up being 193 miles of fun!

Post subject:  Re: Justin's retroactive build thread

Picked up the block and build kit today. Pretty happy with how it came out overall, as it only needed to be bored over .020. There's a little staining in the #7 cylinder. I'm really happy with the build kit Scott supplied as it's all Made in USA parts from major brands. Scott was also able to rebalance my harmonic balancer for less than Damper Dudes charges, so that was convenient. Next I need to figure out if I'm going to have my GT40 heads milled down. It'll depend on whether I can find someone who charges (way) less than MPG and still does a good job.

Also, can anyone tell me what the hole in the block just above the front-most lifter bore is for? It's in the last pic.

Post subject:  Re: Justin's retroactive build thread

That's an oil drain hole.

You won't find many flat tappet cams with 114 lobe separation. You can find some that give better low end torque than the CR266 though which is probably what you want. Here is a comparison between the CR266 and Comp X4254H. It's only 111 degrees lobe separation but it give a good torque increase under 3700 rpm.
