Hello Everyone! Here's my '66 Halfcab

Postby colby45 » Mon Apr 13, 2015 6:02 pm

Hey all! Thanks for the add! I'm really excited to be here. Here is my '66 halfcab with the 170 ci straight six. It's mostly stock except for the tires and light on top. It's new to me, but it's been in my family for a very long time. It sat for the better part of the last decade and I was recently able to grab it and bring it home. When it was stored it had a cracked intermediate housing between the T-case and transmission from a botched clutch install.

Once I got it home and pulled the T-case to replace the housing, I also dropped the transmission and realized it has been mangled pretty bad in the plowing incident that led to the clutch going out. Another member here, akaFrankCastle, was gracious enough to give me an extra 3 speed he had so the plan is to put the whole thing back together with the new tranny here in the next week and get her back on the road. "Sally" (I have no idea where the nickname came from, it's just what we have always called it) needs some other work: a carb rebuild, some front end work, new bushings, etc. from years of abuse as a plow truck, but once I get the drivetrain set I will get working on those things. I'm excited to be a part of this community! Here's some pics. I will take some better ones when I can. I snapped these when I retrieved her.

This is the first time that sending someone home with a 3 speed has been referred to as an act of kindness.

I'm going to start sneaking them into people's trucks during breakfast. Landshark, looking at you. Still haven't forgotten the banana peel on my trailer from the swap meet last year.

Colby, did you get a chance to check your VIN tonight?

Did that thing come with any hubcaps?

I haven't had a chance to check my VIN. My shop is not co-located with my house unfortunately and I didn't get a chance to get up there tonight. I'll see if I have an old copy of the registration floating around my office tomorrow that I can grab it off of. No hubcaps unfortunately. Those tires and wheels are older than me so the hubcaps are long gone as far as I know. Well you saved my bacon on the 3 speed so I definitely consider it an act of kindness and I really appreciate it!

And thanks for the warm welcome! I'm excited to be a part of the community!

Good job getting FrankCastle to reduce his collection of 3 speeds by 10%. Welcome!

Welcome aboard.

I love the half cab look, especially with that light.

Thanks! Yeah I am pretty fond of the light too. It worked once upon a time but the wires got disconnected along the way. I should add that to the list of things to get working again.

Well, welcome Colby.

I think that thing was there since I lived up there in the late '90s. Nice to see it's going to a good home.

Thanks! Yes I am happy we finally got it home. It's been too long. I believe it's been up there since about 2001. It sat for a while in our driveway in Granby before that.

Yes I definitely am. I don't believe it will ever be a plow truck again. I think the hydraulic pump needs to be rebuilt or replaced just so you know.

Welcome!!! Nice ride!!!
I'm pretty sure that a member here took a picture of it not too long ago with the shop/storage # in the background and I called and asked what they wanted for it, or if it was for sale, they told me it didn't belong to them and the guy I talked to said he was trying to buy it from the owner too for quite some time!

Does anyone know a good way to try and gather some history on Early Broncos? Things like what dealership it was delivered to, or what options it had when it was sold? I have looked around and I can't find a good place to start looking. I was thinking I could request the title history from the DMV but I have no idea if they have and/or would give me that info.

Try this out. Won't give you ownership stuff, but it will give your build sheet stuff.

Edit: I forgot yours was a '66. Marti report may not work for you...

You can request a title history and VIN search through the state for "historical purposes". Specific forms are required from the state and you may need to have a VIN verification conducted to prove you are currently in possession of the vehicle.

If you live close to Denver and don't mind wasting a day, you can apparently go straight to the capital offices and have it done while you wait.

Best of luck either way. I sent in my request back in January. They cashed my check on 1/28/15 and I still haven't received squat back from them.

Thanks for the input guys. I think I might try and request a title history report from the state once it's back on the road. Seems like patience is always required when woring with the DMV.

The VIN decoder is super helpful so thanks for that. That gave me some basic info to start working off and I'll see if I can get anything more detailed from the DMV.

Here are a couple more pictures now that it is back on the road again. One minor issue that is still hanging around is that the battery isn't charging when the engine is running. I ordered a new voltage regulator as some preliminary testing pegged the problem between the field contact on the alternator and the voltage regulator. The alternator was new from before it sat for all that time so hopefully that will be fixed next weekend once I get the new reg. Then all that's left is a long, relatively slow trip home from the foothills.

Here it is in the shop for the last time (for now) while we changed the oil.
