I sprayed the cheaper solvent based paint for a test card today. I noticed they had the formula in the newer water based paint. I might try that too, its surprising how different they can come out. The water based stuff is 4x more expensive.

Re: 72 Red Explorer Sport Broncohio says T=Candy Apple Red, our BASF mixing system said T=Candy Apple Red, Ford 66-79, so it's the right color.
I might have blown the mix, I mixed a very minimal amount, in between coats on a car I was painting. Our paint booth was recently upgraded and we are moving a lot more air through the booth. But this has made the space around the booth drafty. Our scale is sensitive enough to be affected by this added air flow. I think I might have missed the mix by a +/-0.1 grams of one toner due to the draft. In 18 oz you'd never see it, but in 2 oz it can make a big difference. I'm going to mix it again, maybe 6 ounces, without the booth running.
I've been reading about Candy Apple & looking at pics, and it's not a bright red, like my test panel.

Re: 72 Red Explorer Sport I'd think that your inner door panels and inner tailgate would still be pretty true to the original color.
Here's one that I removed the 70's carpet from and it looks a lot like yours.(it was also a candy apple red)
