Ring gear pattern

Ring gear pattern

Postby BOBS 2 68S » Thu Sep 29, 2022 3:18 pm

Tell me if this pattern looks good. This is my first time rebuilding a rear gear. New USA Gear set (4:11), back lash .006-.016 set at .011.
I ask because I just put it together and set back lash, then checked gear pattern and got what I see as a good pattern.
Pinion is set at 14 inch pounds.

It's a little hard to tell. The pattern looks centered on the tooth side-to-side, but top to bottom is hard to tell.

Can you add more grease and then, a trick I use is to grab the carrier with one hand to create drag, then with the other hand, rotate the pinion yoke in the drive direction. This will apply more pressure to the tooth face and improve the fidelity of the pattern.

This was the pattern on mine when it was built. 17 years and 140,000 miles, no problems so far.

So I adjusted the pinion out some and got these patterns. They look better in person.
