A new SUV will or has been recently become available that has been designed to be offroad capable, robust, simple and comfortable. If you liked the old Defender 110's, you will like these:

I just learned about this while watching a SEMA video and after digging in deeper, found that I love their design philosophy of function over fashion.
Solid Axles
Transfer Case
Gas & diesel options (BMW) I have experience with the 3.0 diesel and it is a heck of a motor. The worry, as with all modern diesels, is the emissions junk.
Manual shift transfer case, although it is full-time 4WD with center and diff locks.

After going thru the configurator, prices aren't really even off the charts... I can't seem to spec a diesel either, which is a real bummer! It isn't the prettiest thing, but I could live with it!

TFL did a CO trail run in one:

1973 Bronco, 351 SEFI, Locked, discs, 35's ZF-5spd and Atlas 4spd. 235:1 Crawl Ratio. It may be ugly, but it's slow.
