So this morning on my way to work the bronco died. Acted like no fuel but gas in both tanks. Had wife tow me home, took the day off from work. Got ti in the shop and the shop warmed up. After looking at all the usual suspects ignition, fuel filters. I filled the carb and it ran so pulled the fuel pump and found this. The arm was easy, the spring took some work with a mirror and magnet to get out. The broken pump is a Holley and is 5 or 6 years old. The where the pivot shaft is mounted the housing broke. Any one ever had this happen?

I had the same style pump on my 79. The arm didn't break but it would not pump during cranking. And barely pump at idle. Had to have more rpm(found this out on spring creek) Ditched it for an electric pump.

That is interesting tho. I'd call Holley just cause even though there is no warranty.

I'd also switch to an electric pump.

Thinking hard on going electric. The big reason for me is the part store fuel pump are soft thin metal and do not last. That is why I went with the Holley and it was rebuild able.

Before EFI, I had an Edelbrock mechanical fuel pump. It looks suspiciously like the Holly. I had one last for quite a few years before dropping to like 1psi, the next didn't last more than 1 year. They both caused problems a long way from home. So I'd really consider something more reliable.

I will need a new fuel pump in my 72 when its time to get it going. I was planning on keeping it stock, but it sounds like the reman'd parts store fuel pumps suck? Not surprised really. Guess I need to consider an electric pump.

Any one know if Ford still makes mechanical fuel pumps? I might stop by Ford and ask.

I know this has been beet to death. But what is the most preferred electric fuel pump for use with a carb.

I have been running a Holley red electric for years with no issues ever. I also ran a red electric on my old IdI diesel Ford as a lift pump for years with no issues.

I used a Holley that flowed 100ish gph (Dont remember exactly). It was really loud, but it worked well. I also carried a cheap one from Autozone as a trail spare.

I think the two most commonly used ones in the Bronco community are the Holly Red and the Carter P4070. I had the Carter on my truck when I had a carb and now run it as my LP pump to HP with EFI.
