So as i'm building the bass boat up this winter for more abuse on the trails next year. I've been wondering if the stock dana 20 transfer case will handle all of the abuse for another year as the trail's get harder and my tire size goes up once again. As of now i'm runing BFG mudd terrains 35-12.50 r15 i'm steeping up to a super swamper tsl radial size 36-14.50 r15. The bass boat is'nt a power house by any stretch. just a 302 bored 0.30 and a rv cam. I have 4.10's in the diff's and a detorit in the rear. It has an np435 for a transmission. I got a spare dana20 from a buddy and wondering if i should do the cold duck kit which i believe bring's the gear ratio to 3.15 and while i have it apart throw in the 32 spline output shaft in the rear and up the yoke size too 1350 at least, and twin stick it. Or should i save the money and invest in an atlas 4.3 or the stack b box? what do you guy's think and have the best experience with? thanks matt. |

I have wondered the same. When I get that far with it I think I am going to go with the Stak 3 speed to get the ultra low. After pricing out the 3.15 gear set, twin sticks and the heavy duty output you are around $1900. For an extra $3-$400 you can get a brand new stak 3 speed ready to go with everything you want on the dana 20 plus you get an extra gear! I know when I finally break my dana 20 output I will keep throwing spare outputs in it until I can afford the stak. I like really low gearing! |

For the most part, I think that the D20 is a pretty strong unit. Most people won't ever get in a situation where they will break one under normal wheelin' conditions. Its when guys start going with the 38, 39, 40+ tires, ultra low gears and high torque engines that things start to go bad. And even then I don't think it is that bad of t-case. BUUUUUT, that being said, I wouldn't turn my nose up at a Stak or Atlas either. The only problem with those is their size. They hang a lot lower than the D20 and smacking one of those on a rock wouldn't be any more appreciative than doing the same to the D20, although they are designed for the harsher punishment. |

i've done the tera-low regear on a jeep d-20, and there was alot of grinding involved for the bigger gears, which weakened the case for sure, i don't know if its the same for the bronco dana 20 as the case is somewhat different and the front output is on the other side, but if its the same i wouldn't reccomend it |

[quote="71 bass boat"]has anybody done the gear kit and the output shaft upgrade on the dana 20? if so how hard was the install? quote] I did the Tera Low, and have had no problems. I did the conversion about 6 years ago, and installed the upgrade output from WH about 3 years ago. My feelings are it was very easy for everything. I am not sure of your skills but it was all very straight forward. |

My feelings are dollar wise the TLow is a good product and priced to be done lower than the Stak, or Atlas. Keep in mind additional mods may be needed for the aftermarket TCases such as the drive shafts, and TCase support etc. |

I was in your situation a while ago too. I ended up with the Atlas 4spd because I could get it cheaper than the stak, clock it flat, and get an extra gear. I probably spent a fair bit more to get my Atlas installed (frame mods, exhaust, custom supports etc), but I am way happy with the super low gearing. With the help of friends, I installed it myself, which probably saved me a couple thousand. The lower gears in the t-case only involve modifying the T-case and nothing else, so it will be quite a bit cheaper, but you won't have the real low gearing, nor choices between High and Low. Now, if you've got a budget like most of us, you can always sell your T-case when you're ready for one of the others. I don't know how much they go for, but I do know you can't hardly give away a stock one. J.D. |

It looks like i'm going to purchase the tera low gears and do the 32 spline out put shaft from wild horses. i have an extra t shift dana 20 out of a buddy's 68 sitting in my garage so i can swap in the gears and the out put on the 68 dana 20 and then put it in my bronco when it's done so i can still drive her.Of course that's after i finish the centec wiring harness and put the new floor boards in. |
