Hello again,

I am currently trying to get my fuel system for my 71 in good working order and could use some help on what i"m needing to make the fuel gauge work?

I have cleaned and put new filler hose boots on the front stock aux tank but i am wondering what to look for or try to replace to get the fuel gage to read and show my levels.

Do i need to replace the sending unit or pig tail? or is it more likely my actual fuel gage thats toast?

Any knowledge or tips would help tremendously as my rear tank is next...

-Back end information this Bronco set pretty much since 99 when the old rancher had it new since 74. he was in his 70's in 74'. now I'm just trying to take it step by step getting it back on the road. Ive already rebuilt carb, changed oil/filter and a little sea foam in the tank. I drive it a few miles to work and back now but still a work in progress every night till 12 after work. Truly hooked and won't ever part with it!

Some notes I've taken on this issue to help troubleshooting. Mine does not work either and I'm going to hook p an aftermarket guage and probably will be getting a new tank so I've not tackled this with any effort yet.

Check the switch that toggles the sender between the tanks. It can become dirty or corroded, Wires can be off.
Stock sender is 10 ohms full, 73 ohms empty
Check that the sender is grounded well.
If you can get the wire off the sending unit turn key on and ground wire. if wire and gauge are good the gauge will move, once it reaches the full mark turn the key off if you leave it hooked up you could damage the gauge.
Do the other gauges on the instrument panel work?

Thanks those all sound good i will go through that all tonight!

No the only other gauge that works on mine is the Amps but i don't even know if thats correct really because it bounces pretty rapidly.

Is there some kind of relay or main circuit that controls all of these? I have been trying to look into it but haven't found anything yet that pertains to this issue.

Also there is an after market older amps oil pressure gauge cluster hung on the bottom of the dash that both gauges seem to be working the oil pressure gauge is hard wired in though from the motor with small copper tubing.

If you have not already found this Bronco Site, here is a link to it and a post that has some good discussion on troubleshooting with Viperwolf providing great info. Use his trick of removing the drivers side vent to access the cluster.

There is an IVR located on the back of the gauge cluster that provides the output voltage to the gauges and wired in series if I remember. Search more on that site for diagrams etc that are out there for the cluster itself. This post has the ohm readings for all the gauges.

For some reason, the fuel gauge seems to be a challenge for many of us.

Ya it seems like the gauges are a huge problem the more and more i read into it. I appreciate the site and info i'm going to have to become a member of the classicbroncos.com as well i guess looks like there is a lot of info over there to.

I have had a 69 uncut project that i acquired about 5 years ago and haven't had the time to do much with it and now i've acquired this 71 and can't stop working on it since i bought it, a lot of bugs and kinks to be worked out but love the learning process. Probably a never ending thing with these old things, but its well worth it.

Ill have to get the ole girl in the garage and get my charts and ohm meter out and start from scratch like everyone else. Thanks again for the wisdom.
