For those "not in the know", Colorado allows the use of a license plate on your collector car that corresponds with the year the vehicle was produced. More information here: I just picked up my plates today. If anyone out there would like year of manufacture plates and you have trouble finding them, I'd recommend Manitou Springs. There is a shop called Ruxton's Trading Post, just off of Manitou Avenue on Ruxton Avenue. I thumbed through a few stacks of plates before the ol guy behind the counter asked if there was a particular plate I was looking for. I told him "1972 Colorado". He reaches under the counter and pulls out 4 sets. 20 bucks for the set. Plenty of other years in those bins as well. |

I saw some "Colorful" tags in some of the bins but didn't think to ask if he had any in '72. I'll have to see if I can find some of those two, seeing as there is no limit to the number of YOM tags you can have associated with a single vehicle. |

Anyone know if there are any issues with using these as regular use plates? I'm not seeing one, as the law allows for "Demonstrations, parades, and when their operation on the street and highway will not constitute a traffic hazard". My driving may constitute a traffic hazard, I don't see most Broncos creating one. BTW, looks like Ebay has a bunch of vintage CO plates for cheap. I just bid on one for my '71. Thanks for posting this up, these are really cool! |

My reading of the wording on that webpage leads me to say no, you cannot use these as a regular use license plate. The "or" scenario which you quoted, appears to me, to be a reference to use of the vehicle specifically for show or demonstration. It is provided in that context. Were it presented differently, i.e. in it's own bullet, separate from the references to demonstrations and parades, I would be inclined to say you could use them for regular use. That being said, if you were pulled over the only way in which a law enforcement officer would be able to make the determination that you were not headed to a collector car gathering, or other stated purpose allowed under the law, is if you admitted as much to the officer. If you were so inclined, I'm sure the DMV could clarify the law. I'm not planning to run the plates all the time. I'm ordering personalized collector tags for that. Which reminds me, the 7 letter restriction shot a hole in my planned "STROPPED" plate. Back to the drawing board. If that eBay auction exceeds 20.00, let me know. I found '71 tags down at that shop as well. Also, if anyone else is interested in YOM plates and cannot find them and Manitou Springs is a bit too far to drive, let me know. I'll head down there, snap pics of all the tags available for your year, you make a choice, and I'll mail them to you at cost or deliver them to a meeting. |

I run '32 plates on the roadster. They say you can't use them as regular plates, but not once have I been stopped, and not once have I driven with the regular plates showing. If an officer was cranky enough to pull you over for them, just say you're heading home from a gathering and show him your real pates, which are required to be with the vehicle, anyway (they issue you two sets of plates: the regular, and the year-of-manufacture). I'd be shocked if they don't let you off the hook. P.S. When buying year-specific plates, always get a matching set. It would suck if somebody already has your number. |
