I couldn't seem to find the other thread where we were discussing power steering woes............

Several of us have had challenges with reliability of the Explorer pumps. I have replaced 4 or 5 since swapping in a 351 last spring. I contributed it to marginal pump for the application combined with poor rebuilds from parts houses.

Well Viperwolf did a bunch of research and came up with a high flow pump that will fit the Explorer brackets with very minimal effort.

The first attempt at using this pump on my rig was problematic as the pump was starved due to the fitting (return into pump) having a very pronounced 90 degree turn in it. The pump howled and growled under load.

2nd attempt Viperwolf came up with a different fluid return line that has a really nice radius to it.

We installed it a couple of weeks ago and my brakes and steering improved dramatically. Best they have ever been !

just to add some info about the explorer pump with the superduty internals.

I have rebuilt 4 of these and measured just about every part you swap from the superduty pump - the only thing i can find that is different is the cam ring (see circle in picture below) the superduty one has a slightly larger inner diameter hole (elongated egg shape) at either end. Makes sense as that would mean the vanes in the rotor would extend a bit more and move more fluid I would suspect. Thats it, thats the only thing different between the two. I am running one on my 76 with disk and hydroboost, so far so good. there is a little whine when you are on the brakes and turning at a stop but otherwise its effortless.

Are there any specs for the one your running?
