Can I trust a Craigslist Electrical Repair-Guy?

Postby laffycaffi » Mon Mar 22, 2021 5:41 am

If you’ve seen my previous post, I’m getting tired of looking at a bunch of wires with no idea of how to diagnose, let alone fix my rear blinker/tail light/gas level meter wonkiness.

So I went to Craigslist and found a guy who says he will come in and offer a free diagnostic if you hire him to make the fix. If you don’t hire him, he charges $120 to diagnose.

Of course he probably will wind up charging about $300 to fix is what I’m thinking.

Does this sound like a fair proposition?

Anyone here enjoy geeking out on electrical stuff? I’d rather hire someone from the forum. I have 2.5 pipes, a Flowmaster 40 series and two stock manifolds that old be happy to trade as well.

Have you done the basics that other guys recommended in your other post? If you’ve already traced all the wiring going from the firewall back to the rear end and have found nothing that looks suspect, and you’ve also checked the grounds along that same route- I’d say Craigslist is 50/50 in finding someone trustworthy and knowledgeable.

Not sure where you are located, and I’m no electrical wizard but I’d be happy to lend a hand.

Thank you. I'm in Centennial (closer to Aurora)

I have looked at everything and the grounds look good. But Im going to remove all grounds, clean them a bit and reconnect.

If i still have issues, I'll let you know! Thanks!

It’s tough to see much there. I’d follow every wire to make sure nothing looks nicked or brittle, clean up all grounds with a wire brush, and then probably start testing the connections with a multimeter. 50+ year old wiring could be just about anywhere.

I’m happy to come help. I can usually do late afternoon on during weekdays. I could probably also do Saturday morning.
