Best option for switched power

Postby Kinder » Sat Oct 30, 2010 8:09 am

Looking for my best option for a "switched" power source. So I've done a search on CB.com and it looks like the two options discussed are to run off the back of the ignition switch or put a bosch solenoid in then run a lead off of that. Some of the items I'm running are radio, CB, trailer brake control w/power back to the break-away battery. Right now I'm running the radio & CB into the old fuse box and then I just added a small fuse box under the dash and ran the brake controller/charge line into this w/power off the back of the ignition switch. But I'm not sure if I'm putting too much of a load on the ignition. So are these the only two options, or is there another source closer to the battery and w/more amp capacity?

Thanks,
Kirk

The CB and radio are low amps so they are fine as is. Brake controller and trailer power are high amp. I would add a relay under the hood. Run a heavy gauge wire from the starter solenoid (battery side) and switch the relay using the green-red wire from the old voltage regulator. That will take the load of the ignition switch and give you plenty of trailer brake and charging power. Don't forget to fuse the relay.

Thanks Viperwolf, I figured that was the way to go. I'll get on it!
