Manual transmission swaps 3 spd to 4 spd

Postby Shawns Fords » Mon May 16, 2011 6:24 pm

Well my Boss has a 74 EB and he has a toploader 4 speed with case he is willing to give me in trade for a C4 install into his. I am curious if there is much length difference between that and the 3 speed I already have? I am hoping I wont have to have my new shafts altered anymore. Transfer case comes with the 4 speed and I believe its the same as the one I already have. I figured here would be the best place to find out.

I imagine that your boss has either an NP435 or T-18. In either case, the length is pretty close to what the 3 speed is (+/-1"). The NP uses a 6 cylinder tail/intermediate housing which is shorter than the V8 housing. In any case, the transmission mount bolts right up without any change in lengths.

As I recall the toploader 4spd is about 3/4" longer than the 3 spd. Elongate the crossmember holes to move it back a little. Probably don't need any driveshaft changes.
