Loving my Q-jet

Postby ClayJ » Sun Nov 07, 2010 4:57 pm

I bought my quadrajet about 4 years ago in an attempt to add some pep to the anemic engine in my Bronco. It didn't help and I wound up parking the bronco because it was just undependable.

Now that I rebuilt my motor, I'm actually able to see just what the Quadrajet has done for my motor.

On yesterday's run I was able to put the Bronco in 1st or 2nd and just control my speed with the throttle, without resorting to the clutch and brakes. I could let the RPMs drop really low and it didn't die. I didn't have to downshift and rev the engine high as I climbed or descended.

I didn't do any extreme off angles, but even when my Bronco was running great 15 years ago, it didn't run this well. Any sort of a steep climb, descent, RPMs below idle, or tilt much left or right and the engine would die. Dakan Rd definitly had some steep sections with large burms at the top, and my Bronco just motored right over them.

While going back over my Qjet notes, I came across this article which is part of why I stuck with the qjet for this rebuild.

I'm sure happy.

I think the QuadraJet is a good alternative to going with a full EFI System with 23 gallon tank, special fuel pump, new fuel lines, wiring, etc. Sounds like it is an all around good carb. I think mine has an Edelbrock but not sure how it will perform. I think this Carb may be a good option for Cortez.

You know I'm flip-flopping on the EFI. I heard that BC Bronco custom builds Q-Jets for off-road extreme angles etc. and you can apparently, virtually lay the truck on its side and still run. It does sound good, but my butt puckered a bit last summer when my edelbrock flooded out on steep hills. When it gets so steep you don't want to back down the hill, that's when you really want the carb to run. slap posting.php?mode=reply&f=5&t=200#

Mine is the BC built Q-jet. My original 2 barrel Holley used to sputter on relatively shallow hills. There were some steep (for me) sections on Dakan road that I know the Holley would have had trouble with.

I doubt if I'll ever be on a hill as steep as you're talking about. I mostly 4wheel to get to the beautiful views, not to flirt with brown streaks in my shorts.

I have no idea. I looked up the numbers on it once and found out it was manufactured for a 69 corvette.

I'm no expert, but the things I've read say that most qjets are much larger than the motor they are on actually needs, but that all the vacuum controls make the carb act like it's sized just right. I don't know about that, but it seems to run my 302 great.

As the weather has gotten colder in the mornings, I do get just a bit of starting trouble. It starts then dies after about 10 seconds if I don't pump the throttle a bit. After 30 seconds of solid running it keeps itself going great.

Have you been up left-hand canyon? My litmus test is the squeeze at lefthand...if the q-jet can do that then I'll postpone the EFI. It's not a real tough spot, but my edelbrock hates it...bumpy - off angle.

I'm running a Motorcraft 2100'ish stocker and I love it, but I have to confess I've rebuilt it 3 times to get it to the current state. The only problem I've had since the rebuilds is a nose down stall, but we are talking 50 degree plus nose down and slamming rocks, then the front fuel bowl flooding kicks in. Nose up any angle and side angle over 45 degrees I've had no problems. It's no 4 barrel powerhouse but in off-road conditions it is hard to beat.

For anyone running a carb off road should have the spring loaded needle and seats. Also a trick I use is put a fuel pressure regulator in. And when going wheelin turn it down to 2psi or so. Just DONT forget to turn the pressure back up before hitting the road or you'll run it lean. The lower fuel pressure keeps the carb from flooding when the floats are bouncing.

I currently run an edelbrock on both broncos. I have spent most of the summer tweaking the one in my 79 getting it to run right. I installed an AEM wideband o2 and tuned it. My edelbrocks run up or down but spudder side to side. Found a fix for that and it seems to work good. Once I tuned it correctly it hasn't givin me any problems.
