Wiring harness install

Postby Justin » Tue Jan 04, 2011 7:31 pm

I ordered a Centech harness for my truck yesterday. Anyone have any tips to make the install smoother?

It has good directions, soldier every splice for piece of mind. I spliced in my wiper plug under the dash so I didn't have to fish the wires up the windsheild frame. Overall it is a pretty easy install, you should have it done in a wekend.

It is preferred to re use your ignition switch, I also re used my wiper switch.

Lay the new harness out in a warm area before you start to get all the curves out and get an idea what goes where. It helps to have a warm workspace/shop when pulling the harness through the firewall because the seal is somewhat of a fight to get seated properly. A high quality wire stripper/crimping tool is well worth the money if you don't already have one. I did not crimp any terminals, but soldered and waterproof heat shrinked them instead (had my fill of PO's faulty crimps). In the Centech instructions they give a part # for a Snap-On connector removal tool when you rewire the steering column. I bought the whole set which has come in handy more than once on other projects. I also put dielectric grease on all connectors to keep corrosion down. Another thing that might be handy are the wiring diagrams for the Bronco. The biggest thing is to read and fully understand the instructions, and take your time to do it right.
Have fun, Mark

I hear the harness and directions are better now. I got mine about 5 years ago and the only issue i had was getting the break light to work. It took me a few days for the install, not really hard at all.
