transmissions, what are my options?

Postby Brianut » Mon Dec 20, 2010 8:27 am

running 33's, with 4.10's, and the stock 3 spd. '74
I know that the np 435 gets you a lower first and that is great and all but are there any 4 spds that are 1-3 the same but maybe with an overdrive 4th?

running with traffic this morning I seemed to be running a little higher Rpm than I would have preffered(not sure exactly how high tach has no light).
no idea how fast as the speedo reads 60 but I am guessing it was really about 70.
since I am planning on this being a DD in the long run I think it might be better to have somewhat of an OD.

Crazy as it seems I kinda like the manual tranny, but I guess wouldnt totally rule out an auto, just not sure the c4 gives any benefit over what I have now(gear ratio)

I know there are doubler xcase boxes and stuff, do they make an overdrive of sorts?

or maybe I am wrong in my thinking, gear taller in axles and lower in tranny(435)?
realistically this wouldnt happen for a bit as funding is running short but just looking for ideas.

lemme have it, my brain is open.

Ford did make a toploader with overdrive in the mid-70s. I think Duff's has the output shaft kit and some info on the website.

or save the money for an nv4500 or zf5. both will cost a bit but you'll get the super low first and od 5th.

I'm leaning towards a 700r4...strong tranny with lots of support, parts and conversions already completed

I love my ZF5. I run 35's with 4.10's and did pretty darn good wheeling with the D20. Now that I have the Atlas, there is no lack for low end gearing. On the highway she works great! Will run faster down the road than I car to drive it. I wouldn't be surprised if I could get up to 100mph, but she's right at home around 70mph. Don't have a tach so not sure what rpms I am running.
