Stock Alternator Wiring

Postby mickphatmac » Mon Jun 20, 2016 11:54 am

I changed my stock alternator a couple weeks ago and my battery still won't stay charged. It definitely takes a charge and holds it until I start using it (starting, radio, lights) so I don't think it has to do with the battery.

Here is a picture of one off the Internet and then a picture of mine. Looks like I might have two of the wires mixed up. The ones with the BLUE and BLACK COVERS?

Is that possible? Or would I have blown up and started on fire already?

First picture is me, second picture is off the Internet.

You have the orange one on a ground terminal. Orange goes to the FLD terminal. Black goes to STA. Hopefully the regulator is still ok, alt will be ok.

Ok, so I put Orange onto FLD, I put the "blue covered" wire onto the STA, The FAT black wire with the Black cover is connected to the BAT.

I also have the positive choke wire (bright white) running to the STA as well. Is that all correct?

Bolted the Alternator back in, started up the Bronco. What should the Alt. Gauge read on the Speedo?
Mine reads Zero.

Zero is no charge and no discharge. What happens if you turn the lights on?

There is a loop at the back of it that needs to have the 10g wire passing through. Run the wire through the wrong direction and it will read backwards. There is a bullet connector in that wire for this purpose. Disconnect the battery before messing with this wire.

Check battery voltage before starting and after starting. One will be higher than the other. If it's charging the running voltage will be it.
