Need more power

Postby trei75bronco » Fri Sep 23, 2016 7:54 pm

Looking to get More power out of my motor. I bought it built so have no clue what pistons were put in. I know rhis will dictate the heads. Anyone have any pointers. Would like 350 to 400 hp. Would a better efi like fast help ? Any input

Turbo or super charger?

I'm not sure what is realistic to get out of a N/A 351. But we all know the basics...fuel, air, fire.

Can I ask why? In a crawler, gobs of power usually breaks stuff. Especially since you trailer to the trails right? Are you looking for higher RPM power or low end grunt?
1973 Bronco, 351 SEFI, Locked, discs, 35's ZF-5spd and Atlas 4spd. 235:1 Crawl Ratio. It may be ugly, but it's slow.

You want usable HP or just big numbers? What's the application? What are the details on the engine currently?

Half a BAR should do the trick.

The motor is a mild build. Rv cam steel heads with roller rockers edelbrock performer 289 intake howell tbi feels flat. I did go to a c4 from manual so that doesn't help either

Install better heads and a more aggressive cam. Install decent multi point fuel injection and tune it properly. Or force the induction.

Here is Viper's desktop dyno sheet with curves for GT40 and AFR165 heads using the Comp Cams 35-349-8 cam that we are both running.

Image

With GT40 heads, the engine is making a respectable 310HP, with ARF165s you are closer to 370HP/440tq.

The important thing is that the 35-349-8 cam is not that radical. I still get good idle and cruise quality. My previous cam probably made a little more HP, but you had to wind the engine up more to get it. That being said, my old cam is up for sale (~10,000miles on it) if you go that route.

Forgot to ask, is your engine a roller block?

AFR 165s are around $1600 and a roller cam with conversion parts will be near $700. Add in pushrods, rockers, gaskets, oil, timing chain, etc and you're looking at $3K.
