I just wanted to put the word out that you CAN have a carburetor and have it run well.

My Bronco starts right up after sitting for weeks in the winter outside...no issues.
Warms up in a minute or two and ready for the road.


Just a FYI as there is a perception that you need a EFI to make a Bronco run well.
I love my Bronco!

I'll accept that Vapor lock challenge.




I'm thermal insulating the cab from engine heat right now and have already wrapped the fuel lines to reflect heat.

(I want to be able to 4x4 Moab in the summer for hours without g the passengers or roasting anything that sits on the floor.)

Pre insulating thermal heat signatures were 164 f passenger side, 126 f on the drivers side after 1/2 hour.

I believe that a well tuned carb can perform pretty well for a lot of situations. It's not a requirement to go to efi, but there are many off-road situations where the carb will not work or will flood out. Only bronco I'd consider keeping the carb on is a stocker that I'm trying to keep original.

Both my broncos had run edelbrock carbs and once tuned right they didn't have any issues.

As a note, just wrapping the fuel lines with a thermal wrap wont prevent vapor lock. I had it figured out on my 79 where it wouldn't vapor lock but the most extreme heat. And even my efi on the 74 vaporlocked in 75* weather.

I'm going to copy the thermal insulation techniques I used at Sandia working on a flight capsule.

Basically little layers...not just one thing or type of insulation.

Mylar layers, some thermal fiberglass, aluminum layers, a heat shield here and there, some wrapping of exhaust components..etc...

I'm trying to keep the body from getting heat soaked and having that heat travel up and around areas.

I'll keep working using the IR gun to see where the heat is traveling until I have it cool enough.

The goal is to be able to be 4x4ing barefoot all day.

Mine ran fine over a wide range of conditions. However it always needed to error slightly rich, as it had a spot or two where it leaned out. I jetted it as lean as possible for Denver and drive it over Imogene Pass without issue (over 13,000 ft asl). What killed the carb was the bouncing offroad, stirring up the fuel and causing the engine to stumble.

Carbs can cover 80% of average driving, but that last 20% (steep hills, altitude, extreme heat) is where EFI shines.
