Ring and Pinion opinions

Postby ScottBarnes » Mon May 21, 2018 1:17 pm

I’ve got to replace the R&P in my 9”. Any opinions on brand? I assumed I would go with Yukon, but for no particular reason. Thought I would throw it out there for feedback.

This thread just got bumped today: http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/general- ... and-3.html

The chart halfway down the page is claiming Spicer gears to be far and away the best. Then a couple others better than Yukon. Having seen that; I've installed a heck of a lot of ring and pinions and I've always liked the pattern I've gotten from the Yukon gears. I've never gotten a noisy set from any manufacturer and I've never seen a failure in my gear installs. I just installed Yukon cheapies(USA standard) in the rear of my pickup truck and Dorman gears in the front. I haven't put it in 4wd to listen to the front gears but the rears are quiet and I got a good pattern on both gear sets. In my latest bronco craziness I've got Richmond gears in the front(only thing offered for a true hi9) and I installed Yukon gears in the rear 3rd. Both sets look well made and have nice patterns.

Terrific -- that's what I was looking for. Is there a good source for Yukon gears here in the area? Looking for 31 spline 4:11's. Thanks much!

I just put usa standards in my bronco. Only have a 100 miles or so on the rear but they are quiet. The fronts havent been under power but hubs locked (on coast side) they are quiet.

I don't think the spline count matters when replacing the gear and pinion. But I would probably replace all the bearings while you're in there. I think I bought a bearing kit with the solid pinion spacer from Iowa and it ended up being Yukon bits anyway. http://www.quickperformance.com/Ford-9-Master-Bearing--Install-Kit-Timken-USA_p_13.html

It does. The splines have to match the axle shafts. But you bring up a valid point...install kit!

For just a ring and pinion spline count doesn't matter. Since you don't have the carrier break in a 9in you can keep it and run any gear you want.

You definitely need to replace bearings. There was a lot of metal in the oil.

I don't see a chart. What am I missing? Should it be in post #67? Looks like an 'attached image' is missing for me.

I had a set of USA Standard installed in my F250, they went in fine and seem to be performing well. Even if they were 'noisy' I'm not sure you'd hear it over the 7.3. I guess if you did, you'd know they were really bad.
