1966 w hich power brake system??

Postby la hi » Tue Jul 02, 2019 7:34 pm

I have manual drum brakes with a single master cylinder. The brakes are not holding when stopped with the new engine and auto transmission. It stops on the road but it takes a while.

I'm thinking of putting a front disc conversion, and power brake system.
I can use either vacuum system with a vacuum booster or hydro boost.

Which do you recommend?

Do you have a pic of the master cylinder? If it is the old single reservoir, first step is to upgrade to a newer, dual reservoir setup from a later year Bronco (67 or later). If you are going to do a power booster, do hydro. That said, I battled a soft pedal for awhile until I replaced the master. Now, I have incredible brakes (disc front and drum rear) without power assist. You might want to just try replacing the master first.

The master is shown in the picture. It is the old style, one cylinder. If I convert the master now, will I have to replace it again if I go with hydro-boost?

Just go hydroboost now with disc up front. It's a big safety item.

My 2 cents.

Dual master for safety, discs up front for safety (winter time driving and stopping distance). Add a power booster if you think someone will be driving it that isn’t use to manual brakes or if you have problems with leg strength. If you have power steering the hydro boost is hard to beat, but has the added cost of building / buying additional hydraulic lines. If manual steering or if you want an off the shelf installation, then the vacuum booster is the way to go. Any upgrade will require new brake lines and adding a proportioning valve (which replaces the distribution block on the ‘66). Remember that if you go disc brakes up front then the master needs to be disc/drum, or you run the risk of the discs dragging unless you remove the residual pressure valve from the drum/drum master.

Well, maybe 5 cents worth.

Go straight to front discs and hydro boost. Much safer regardless of tire size.
