Never done body work before

Postby rt9 » Mon Jul 15, 2019 6:24 pm

I want to remove this rust before it starts to eat the steel. Any suggestions?
I'm not ready for a complete paint job yet, but figure I better do something here soon.

Thanks

Rick

I don't think there is much you can do that won't look bad or require paint work. You really need to strip it down and hit it with some rust converter, or cut out the bad stuff and start over. I wish I had a better suggestion.

Yeah do it now or you’ll be in my shoes dude. It doesn’t get better, easier, or cheaper.

So the plan is to clean up the area around the rusted seams and remove the old seam sealer. I found a cool little dremel wheel that gets right after it!
I also purchased a portable media blaster at HF that I'll try out too. Should clean out the groove nicely.
Once the gap is open and cleaned up, I'm going to use a spray bottle with encapsulation fluid or some POR-15 on a brush.

Epoxy prime, New seam seal, and Paint.

Wish me luck!!!

I think you are doing it the best way possible without stripping the tub. What I see in your pics is what I imagined as best case scenario.

Thanks things are good. Still settling into a new life here. Trying like hell to get my shop done. It's very hard to find electricians and plumbers willing to take the work. When I do they want $2000+ per day in labor. So I'm doing most of it myself.

FOLLOWING!!

I wanna know how that media blaster works out for ya? How messy? I need a way to sand nooks & crannies

A buddy just told me you can use corn kernels as media blaster, but he’s not a body guy so who knows.

I just cut out my old rear quarter and before welding new metal to old, I’d like to clean it up first & hit it with rust treatment. The issue I’m having so far is rust treatment seems to impede the welding process...so, how to get the treatment between two panels?!!

I’m ready to install new b-pillars & quarters...last thing I want is to do all this work & see rimust come through the paint in 5 years.

There are lots of media choices for blasting. I'm not an expert, I'd read up and start with the least aggressive product and work up to whatever works.

I've never tried to weld through the rust treatments, but I know it leaves a coating. I had to sand it off to get body filler to stick.

Mini bead blaster is "ehh"... Ok I guess but not real good getting in the groove. Makes a mess. Lol

Sprayed encapsulation fluid on and brushed it in the gaps. Another coat in 20 minutes.

Overall there wasn't much rust inside, luckily.

Glad you caught it. I've acquired my broncos when it was too late for this sort of method. It's just great to see you save a bronco body!!

Thanks. I'm trying.
The hard part is where do you stop? This could easily morph into a major project.

Bronco creep is real. There's a reason mine spends so much time on jackstands. Besides fishing, that is.

So, Adam inspired me to finish mine. It's still a 15 footer but no more rust seams!
