351w help

Postby jgrow » Tue Dec 31, 2019 11:59 am

Merry New Year all!

Posting because I have analysis paralysis. I recently acquired what i believe to be a healthy '95 351w. While dropping it into my rig as is and going would probably be fine, I think I can justify cost of heads + cam to give it a little more giggle factor. I'm not looking for monster power, just more low end usable torque vs stock 302s. My driving style usually has me shifting by 4k rpms if not less. I've searched and read and read and read. Starting to feel like i'm trying to reinvent the wheel here. Guessing someone out there has added these to yield years of fun. Anyone have a magic formula that worked for them?

My setup will be:
351w
holley sniper
sanderson/bronco hut headers
NV3550
4.88
37s(maybe just 35s)

some background: have been driving a '72 with Explorer 302, Ford FI, NV4500, 35s, 4.88s. Love the setup, will go to wife/kid. I put 7-8k miles/yr driving mostly street to and from work and kids sports. Pulls great in 5th gear Colo spgs to Monument (1,000ft climb < 10miles)

Thanks for any/all input and again wishing everyone a happy and healthy 2020!

Take a look at Digger's build thread. He put a cam in his 351 (before he started switching to the diesel). I believe he and viper have the same cam.

I have a similar set up and have been trying to research some cams for my 351W build. I went back and checked Digger's build thread and the cam in question is a Comp Cams 35-349-8. Thinking I might give this one a try.

That cam is used in a number of club Broncos- including mine. I found a set of GT40 heads on Craigslist that had been rebuilt already for around $300. I believe that the headers you are planning to go with will work with the GT40 and GT40P heads. I know there are also a number of guys running the P heads as well.

How do you like that setup? Obviously the economics of those gt40s is much more appealing. Regrets or hunger for a little more?

I’ve enjoyed it. I’m not smoking tires or anything, but with my setup, I have no issues pulling through I-70 mountain passes at 70+ mph. I’m on 35’s with 4.56 gears and a ZF5 tranny.

If I’m not mistaken- Zoso is running aluminum heads and I’m not sure which cam he has. Might check if he has a build thread or ask him.

Sounds like the setup works and I’m sure it’s quicker than my 302. Thanks for the response. I appreciate the input.

I have the same cam as stated above with ProMaxx heads. I can light up my 35 12.50's easily and if I get in it I spin then when it shifts between 1st and 2nd. When I priced out gt40 heads vs Promaxx I found it to be worth the money to go aftermarket. I have no header problems, the heads came ready to bolt on and they flow better than gt40s.

Excellent. I appreciate the input. Seems like the cam has been tested and enjoyed. Adding that to the piece of the puzzle. Will now figure out the heads. Haven’t seen promaxxs, will take a look.
