Oil Drain Plug Leak

Postby Eck » Wed Apr 29, 2020 5:52 pm

Just changed my oil and I have a slow leak around the drain plug. Was wondering if anyone has a hack or suggestion on re-installing the drain plug so this doesn’t happen?

Thread sealer?

Probably not the “correct” answer, but Hack YES...
I have used the little rubber washer off of the garden hose, it’s size is just right and for 3000 miles you can count on it not leaking!

Well, put the copper washer on and now it leaks worse. I haven’t even started the Bronco to pressurize it and in a day it’s leaked 3 times as much as it did before. So damn annoying.

That’s not right, is it cross threaded and not “square” to the pan or maybe the mating surface on the bolt or pan have a nick in it? If it all looks and feels right then there are washers that have an O-ring built into them or the ID is made of rubber while the OD is a crushable material.

Per a suggestion, I torqued the drain plug down to about 30lbs and no more leak! I tend to over tighten stuff so was very reluctant at first, not knowing how much I should be tightening it down.

Finally, an easy fix!
