Onto electrical issues with fuel gauge

Postby mickphatmac » Sat Aug 08, 2020 8:26 pm

Are the two wires on top of sending unit, gas tank interchangeable?
I bought a 23 gallon gas tank from a member here and it works awesome!!!

It has a Black wire and a Blue wire coming out of the sending unit and when I first installed it I used the black wire as the ground and the blue wire runs up to the fuel gauge.

Even with a full tank of gas it read empty.
We were messing around with it this weekend and ran the black wire to the fuel gauge and put the blue wire as the ground and it jumped!!! it pegged all the way Full.

I was wondering if that might be a true reading or whether connecting it backwards gives it a seizure!! ;)... Or might have just had it backwards to begin with!?!?

If it's connected backwards it will peg the gauge. So the other way was correct and something is wrong with the float or sender.

Thanks Phil

as always with Broncos (or mine at least).... Well Crap!

Probably has a good 18 or 20 gallons in it so I’ll try running it around a little bit before I drop the tank.

Any suggestions on a good 23 gallon sending unit that won’t break the bank!?

Let me know if you get this sorted out! I put a new sending unit in my tank and my gauge still reads empty.

Mick- sent you a PM.

Here is a pretty good video on how you can check for functionality of both the gauge and sending unit. I’d also obviously check that the wires between the two are not causing the issue.

The 23 gal tank sending units are notorious for not reading correctly out of the box. We recently cut an access panel into TFBs bed so we can start messing with it in the truck. Plus it’ll allow access in the future for upgrades or repairs.

That looks like a nice unit! When the time comes, I wonder if he could make one a few inches shorter when I replace my tank??
