Tilt Column mechanism not working

Postby mickphatmac » Wed Aug 26, 2020 7:25 pm

Dang it man!!!
Fix 1 thing, another goes wrong!??

So my ‘79 tilt column doesn’t tilt when you use the turn signal. You push it forward and you can feel it moving but it’s not engaging the spring-loaded mechanism on the bottom. Is the little black Doohickey missing something? Is there some sort of block or cylinder that goes on the end of it that pushes the Gold part (green arrow) up to disengage the teeth?

You can push on the little black thing with the white arrows and it moves but it just doesn’t connect with the green arrow part?

*** it does work if you push up on the part with the green arrow with your finger so the tilt mechanism is working, just not the part that engages it through the turn signal lever

On a sidenote, I drove the Bronco to Greeley today to work, yay!!! Then I took it to Les Schwab tire Center to get the alignment done only to be told that I need a new tie rod and drag link. Double Damnit!! No charge, just more money and more work. Only 13 more days to be Really Road Worthy!!!

The tilt lever with the white arrow was bent down, below the spring operated mechanism with the green arrow, I just bent it back into shape and it’s good as new.

Ahh, too much man-handling!! So you bent it in towards the center of the column. Mine hasn't worked either so I need to investigate it.
1973 Bronco, 351 SEFI, Locked, discs, 35's ZF-5spd and Atlas 4spd. 235:1 Crawl Ratio. It may be ugly, but it's slow.

Yep mmmmhmmm!
The bottom White arrow that’s pointing towards the end of that lever, needs to be bent straight back towards the driver relative to how it sits in the column

I see! The lever wasn't engaging the flap enough to get it to release the mechansim. Thanks!
