28oz or 50oz Flywheel

Postby BSpick » Mon Sep 21, 2020 6:35 pm

I picked up a used 302 and am going to replace the clutch and flywheel before I put it in. I can't tell if the flywheel is a 28oz or 50oz? Anybody have any suggestions based off the pic? The engine block is a E0AE D3C, but I think it may have been rebuilt. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Or should I just get this one resurfaced and not bother buying a new one?

E0 is 1980
1968-80 302 engines were built with a 28-ounce imbalance factor. 1981-2001 302 engines were built with a 50-ounce imbalance factor.

If your not sure I would see what you can find online with the casting number for the block, E0 is 1980 which is around the time the 302/5.0 changed from 28oz to 50 oz imbalance. The casting number on the flywheel E8TR-AA is a 1988 casting number which if it was from a 302 would be the 50oz imbalance, however if it was from a 351W it would be a 28oz imbalance. I would try and find as much info as I can on those casting numbers or just have it resurfaced. I am sure someone else will chime in.

What does resurfacing do for you? A general question, not specific to this post?

Resurfacing refers to getting the contact side of the flywheel machined to remove any problem areas like scoring, checking or heat spots. It’s common to do when replacing the clutch and most machine shops can perform it for ~$50.

And you can probably get the ring gear replaced by the machinist.
