I sanded the majority of the PO Red Paint down to the maroon original paint, down to the primer, and in some spaces bare metal. I tried to leave as much of the paint and body work as possible to make things as easy as possible to repair later. I am definitely not a pro, but have done a little body work. So, I would say sand all of the rattle can paint off down to where you start seeing the original paint and body work, then build it back up from there.
I used a great paint remover pads from Eastwood (sanded much faster than sand paper) on a 6.5" Buffer. I think when you get down into the original paint you would be safe to build it , bacak up from there. Lots of guys will say sand to bare metal, but just as many think why re-invent the wheel and re-do what may already be done well.
I have read a lot of horror stories about mixing different brands of primers, paints, and clear coats. Sticking with one brand guarantees no issues. This is just my opinion and will be interesting to read other pro's ideas. I know GMAN, Zilla, etc. have a lot of auto body experience.
