Speedometer issues.
I just replaced my speedo cable and when I drive my bronco the needle jumps all around. Is it possible that the gear in the transfer case is stripped out on the inside or a Problem with the actual cluster? Has anyone else had this issue?

Re: Speedometer issues.
Was it doing it before the speedo cable install? If it was, check out http://classychassisrestoration.com/. They will rebuild and restore the cluster, starting at $50. They've got a good rep over on CB.com.

Re: Speedometer issues.
It has not worked since I have owned it. The needle stayed at zero before. Just not sure if it is grabbing intermittently.

Classy does a great job.

Re: Speedometer issues.
Could be the cable sticking, but the gear is very easy to check and inexpensive to replace.

Re: Speedometer issues.
There is the gear at the end of the cable and there is a gear inside the tcase that can slip out of place. Pull the cable/gear from the tcase and look at the gear inside the tcase. If it isn't square to the cable hole that's the problem.

Re: Speedometer issues.
Glad to see this post. Mine just started making noise and bouncing this winter. I've tried the graphite stuff on the dash side but that didn't do anything. I'll be checking the tcase cable sometime soon too. I've heard the cold weather makes all this worse.

Speedometer issues.
Mine was doing this....replaced the cable and it's fine now. If the gear is ok.....may be a bad...new cable.

He has a new cable. Gears look ok. Rubbing noises coming from speedo head when cable is spun. Something is wrong in the magnet and cup area.

Re: Speedometer issues.
I'm not even sure how long it has been since the speedo worked last. I have had it for over a year and prior to that it was up in Craig out on a farm, so no telling.

Re: Speedometer issues.
Just pulled out the cluster and disasembled it. Phil was right when he said there was a problem with the magnet. I hope I have fixed the issue. Since I have it apart I am repainting the needles and cleaning everything up. I will try to post pica after I finish.

Re: Speedometer issues.
Well I didn't exactly make the situation any better. The cup that has the magnet in it has now completely stopped working and the cup has a lot of play in it. I tried to adjust the magnets because they were hitting the odometer gears. The cluster looks very nice though. I'll mess with it a little more on my weekend to figure something out. If not there's always the option to send it in for a professional resto. I am unable to post pics because it always says I have too many pixels and can't adjust them on my dumb phone.
