power steering box tapping
getting my head around adding hydro assist and need to figure out who taps the boxes around here. i know I can send it to Texas or PSC but i dont need a rebuild just need it tapped. Im going with the Rockstomper ram setup but someone around here must tap boxes?

Re: power steering box tapping
I would recommend having a rebuild kit on hand. You have to completely disassemble the box to drill and tap it so the seals may not survive. Drilling and tapping it is easy once its disassembled.

Re: power steering box tapping
Yep, what CC said. Just replace all the seals anyway.
I bought my box from a guy who had it built in TX. I am sure they will do whatever you ask of them, but they are among the best.
You're running huge tires...you may not be happy with ram assist compared to full-hydro

Re: power steering box tapping
ya, i agree full hydro would be a better idea but i like to do things twice and spend three times the amount of money. for example, the brand new beadlocks i have on the garage for the dana 44/ 9" that i dont have in the rig anymore

Re: power steering box tapping
I will give you guys a chance to say "I told you so". I chose not to spend $500 for box rebuild and ram assist kit. Today I pulled the caps off and tapped. . Added some material to the front cap for more support. Picked up a ram, hoses and all the fittings for $75. The result should be interesting.

Re: power steering box tapping
Front cap seal is leaking like a beatch. Must have screwed up the cap when tig welding the extra material or the seal is toast. Going to order new seals from WH and try it again. So much for its maiden voyage this weekend.

Re: power steering box tapping
I would ditch that box and go with a 4x4x2 box if I were you. It is just a Much better box.

Re: power steering box tapping
I did the 4X4X2 box myself from a junk yard and it was not that hard. When I had it apart I drilled it for hydro assists with out any trouble. I did tear a seal putting it back together but that's all the trouble I had. I would strongly agree with the 4X4x2 box. Right now I did not go with hydro assist because of how much better the new box works. I run 37's on my bronco as well.

Re: power steering box tapping
I pulled everything apart tonight and found a oring with a problem. Replaced it and all is good. I'm gonna give this box a try first. I never had a problem with it after changingn to a saginaw pump. It actually turned these 42s pretty good until I locked the front. If this don't work it will be full hydro.
