I have my spare tire mounted on the stock swing arm spare tire mount. But it's pretty pathetic - the spare hanging off of it by a single long bolt and that weird looking giant wing nut thing. How's that for technical lingo?

Are you running a stock tire size or are you running bigger? If you run bigger tires, I hope you plan on putting the carrier on the bumper because it will cause body damage eventually. But as for the original setup goes, meh...it's a design that needs to be improved on to secure the tire from would be thieves. You can put a pad lock on it. I don't remember what the original carrier looks like. Haven't had one in almost a dozen years.

Ran into the same problem. Had a bit of a budget (none), so came up with a quick solution. Not the greatest, but seems to work and keeps everything where it should be (running 33's). Seems to hold up when I used to bounce around with Kirk and crew!

Essentially ran a strap to the mounting bolt to keep it in a decent position. After that, still not happy and welded up a quick little frame that puts most of the weight on the bumper. My latch was done (did let the tire go at some time), so decided to not use it all. Grabbed a few clips from the hardware store. Also put some chaffing material in to keep from rubbing on the bumper and bracket. Only thing I did not like was drilling a hole through the bumper. Currently have an eye bolt through it to keep the bottom portion stationary. Hasn't come loose yet, so it will stay for the time being. Takes a few seconds to get the tire out the way and access the back.
