Seat Covers for buckets

Postby Jesus_man » Tue Jan 25, 2011 9:28 am

I have two buckets out of a toyota or something. I ordered some seat covers off ebay a long time ago thinking they would be good because you could cinch them down on the sides, but all the eyelets tore loose on install. VERY poor quality. It's time for something a little nicer. I don't want to spend bunches of money, but want something durable that looks good. What have you used and liked? Approx price? Thanks!

Get the canvas ones from Cabela's. I've got them and they are great. They are a universal type, but they look nice and can cinch down with laces. I've had them for probably 4 years and the only problem I have had is that they are sun faded.

This is VERY early and still in the infancy stages, but I am about to pick up several yards of Cordura 1000 denier fabric to make my own seat covers for the Corbeaus I picked last month. If you are not familiar with Cordura, this is the same stuff they make military body armor jackets out of. Mind you, it is not Kevlar, simply the jacket that all the body armor fits in to. The stuff is tough and has a plastic coating on the underside that makes it water resistant. If you have the old covers off of these seats, and really like the seats, let me know. I'll take the old covers and see if I can make you up a new set out of the Cordura when I am done with my A4s.

My current plan is to line the entire back side of the seat panel with horizontal straps (similar in every aspect to the military MOLLE attaching system) to allow me to attach panels and pouches containing things like first aid kits, small tool pouches, and a Camelbak. I also plan to line the lower inside panels on both driver and passenger side with the same straps, allowing me to mount a Blackhawk Serpa holster for my pistol while I am driving.

For a reference to what inspired this, check out Bitch'n Broncos's Member's Rigs thread and check out his Smittybilt ACU seat covers.

Zack, where you getting the Cordura from? I have been thinking of a project, similarly in infancy, that would be good with Cordura...it's just not seat covers.

I found a vendor out of PA that has it listed for 11.85 a yard.

What are you thinking for timeline. You have my interest. I'd love to have pockets and such on the back of the seats. Another factor is cost. While I don't want to spend a bunch, I also don't want to short you and your time involved.

The cabelas ones are similar to what I have, but apparently much much less quality. Ooo, and I have a few bucks on my cabela's card to use as well.

I'm still marking and cutting templates for the A4s. I figure I should be able to finish that up within the next week or so. Once that is done, I'll calculate my needs for the Cordura order and place it. I haven't decided who I will have do the actual sewing, or if I will do it myself. Probably farm that work out. Best case I can give when I would be ready to knock out a second set would be 3-4 weeks away.

Cost wise, I'd be looking for simply cost of materials. There may come a point in time where I might look at marketing something like this, but with the wide variety of seats people are putting in to their Broncos, its hard to pin down templates. If this does become something larger, then I would start to factor in time required and maybe mark ups for profit.

Realistically, it would probably evolve in to a "either provide me with your old covers or a copy of your current seat covers and I will custom make them" type of thing.

Ok. I know a good upholsterer in town. She's done boat tops for friends, even did all the seats in one. She's covered my soft door frames I made last year etc. She's downtown by the Gazette. Let me know if you want her contact. Very reasonable pricing too.

I am doing Corbeau RS up front, then trying to figure a way to get 2 Corbeau SS Buckets in the back. It will be a tight squeeze but 4 buckets would be soooo worth it! Trying to get 2 22" Seats in 40" will be challenging. I devised a mount that will hopefully make it all workout with weld on mounts for bucket seats and 2 4-Point harness. Likely similar to JTS rear bucket mount - or should I say Gregg's rear seats now lol. SS Buckets in the back is the only way to get all 4 headrests to look the same.

BTW - I can order genuine OEM Corbeau Seat replacement covers for around $100 +/- per seat, look spankin' new, and fit WAY better than any cover.
