Metal Cut Off Saw

Postby Entourage » Mon Jan 31, 2011 11:02 am

I Have a 12" DeWalt Chop Saw that I used in doing finish work, furniture, remodel projects, etc. Instead of purchasing a new metal cut-off saw, it is possible to buy a replacement metal cutting blade for my Wood Saw?

I want to build a rear seat bracket and rear tire carrier so not a ton of cuts to justify a $200 tool and trying to save a little cash. Any idea if that would work?

I tried that back in the day. The metal grits get into the motor and kill it. If it is just a few cuts it may be ok but if it is a saw you plan on keeping for a while I wouldn't use it at all for metal cutting. I killed 3 in one week cutting metal until I bought my metal chop saw!

I wonder if making a simple plastic shield out of a 2 liter bottle or something would do the trick to keep the shavings out for folks that aren't doing much cutting?

Not really a good plan, the motor will not hold up to the work load. You will probably burn it up in short order. I learned this the hard way before I purchased a saw made for the job. If you do not want to invest the money in a true metal cut off saw, I would use a saws-all for cutting instead. If you have one of them. If not, let me know, I can loan you the tools you need for a few days.... or bring your materials to the bumper build and do it then if you can hold out till then...

An alternative would be to look into renting one from Home Depot, or even picking up one cheap from a pawn shop or off craigslist. Used I would not pay more than $50-$75 though, and I would want to test it on a cut or two before I laid out the cash.

Great idea guys - thanks a ton for the input. Harbor Freight has a saw for $100 and can always use a 20% off Coupon. Cl is another good idea. I love this club!

I think this is the one I have http://www.harborfreight.com/2-hp-14-in ... 91938.html
used a 20% coupon. Hate buying chinese made tools but dang it I have used the hell out of it for quite a few years and it has done well for the money. I was looking at some other power tools recently with american made names but found they too were made in china, so might as well buy the chinese name and also save the money.

also for minimal smaller cuts you might consider a sawzall. unless I am doing a ton of cutting or something that has to be a perfect square cut i will usually just use my sawzall, less abazive dust mess too.

That is the saw that I was looking at online. I like the idea of a vise on the base as well. I will likely pick one up when it gets closer. I can bring it to the Bumper Build too.
