Rear axle bearing size- 1976 (big bearing I believe)

Postby Zenzone » Mon Aug 29, 2016 9:36 am

Hi..

I'm looking to order some timken bearings online but I'm not sure which part/parts numbers I need to replace both outer bearings. If anyone knows off the top of their head the parts/numbers I need please let me know.

Thanks
Zen

Set25 from Timken is for the large bearing rear end. Not sure where I got this from. My memory is already starting to fail me I guess.

Timken 514003 for rear axle. Set25 is a front axle bearing.

Thanks guys. Does it matter in your opinion if they are the fully sealed unit or is the older style where you have to put them together better because they are open to the axle gear oil?

This is what I found, is this correct for my 1976. Are these the tapered bearings in a fully sealed unit?

Thanks so much!

I use Timken SET 20 bearings. (My new ones just showed up yesterday)

These were the latest style to be used in BB 9s and from what I understand, will retrofit into the older style big bearing housing that came with ball bearings.

Thanks Digger, do those fit 28 spline axles? I have been looking into the set 20 as well. I'm a stock set up, as far as I know nothing in the axle has been modified beyond stock.

I believe those set 20 bearings have a slightly larger ID. Difference is about .030". They work with aftermarket axles and maybe stock 31 spline axles from trucks. If you have the stock axles with the seal in the axle tube use the Timken bearings listed above. Might be a good idea to replace seals while you're there.

Looks like you are right.

Set 20 has an ID of 1.561" (I measured 1.5605")

The 514003 has an ID of 1.531"

Both have an OD of 3.150", so yes, a SET 20 will work in the BB housing, but not with stock axles.
