Best supplier of collapsible steering shaft

Postby Gunnibronco » Sun Apr 02, 2017 4:25 pm

I have my 4x4x2 box installed & my upper column. I was going to make a collapsible steering shaft from the 79 Bronco shaft, but I've decided I should just buy one premade.

What is the best route for getting one. I saw WH makes them to order. Any other suggestions?

Stock 76 upper with a lower made from a solid d shaft on mine. Ended up being about 2/3 the cost of the WH unit.

Thanks. Found Toms has them too, but I'm leaning towards WH. Looks a little nicer than Toms.

I don't think so. I'm pretty sure the 4x4x2 box has a different size input than the stock box. I'm going to double check now.

Yes, it does have a different shaft size, but I don't have it on hand.

3/4" x 36 spline vs 13/16" x 36 spline for the stock stuff.

I was looking at that one too. I have a stock box but a 73-75 column so Viperwolf said that lower would not work.

I *think* I figured a cheapo way out of this. I have a 3/4"x36 (x2) ujoint I was given years ago. This will fit the 4x4x2 box and the lower part of the 79 Bronco collapsible shaft. The upper part of the lower shaft is probably 3/4"DD. I need to double check the 3/4"DD measurements against Borgeson's info, my battery died in my calipers. If it is 3/4"DD, I can add a universal 1"DD above it, and a 1"DD x 3/4"x36 ujoint to attach at my upper steering shaft. Pics to come, if this works. It will save me about $100, since I already have the lower ujoint. Summit has slightly better prices than Borgeson direct. If you buy 2 ujoints & the 1"DD shaft, you are almost the same price as buying Toms or WH, so no reason to do this.

3/4"DD & 1"DD measurments are on the bottom of page 4 here:

No, I said it would work with the correct upper u-joint to replace the rag joint. It just wouldn't bolt in. The rag joint flange is splined to the shaft on the lower but I'm not sure what it is. Your upper shaft is also splined under the flange (I think it's 3/4" 30 spline). You can get a u-joint with just about any combination of sizes and splines.

FYI. My upper is 3/4" 36 spline. It was a Tom's P/S conversion kit from 15+ years ago. Not sure if that was a stock configuration, or something Toms was having made. I can't even remember if the upper was part of the kit.

The catalog link I posted above has all their u-joints listed, you can find about any combo, like Viper said.

I guess I'm just really confused. Is the rag joint at the top of the 76 lower shaft not the same as the rag joint on the bottom of the 75 upper shaft? Both lower shafts will connect to the steering box but obviously if you remove the rag joints in favor of a u joint at the upper/lower connection, you would also need the pieces to install to each shaft in order to use the u joint correct? I called WH last week and they acted like they have nothing to sell me that would connect a 76 lower to a 75 upper. Any clarification or links that better explains this would be helpful. Sorry- I'm just clearly missing something here...

Your rag joint is upside down of the 76-77 rag joint. You would have to bolt the flange on your upper shaft to the flange on the 76-77 lower shaft. A u-joint will join a splined shaft (your upper shaft 3/4"-36 spline) to another splined shaft (whatever the 76-77 lower spline is under the flange). No extra parts needed.

My plan worked out. Only used 8.25" of the 1"DD tubing. This could be an affordable option if you have the 78/79 steering shaft & the lower joint is good. I removed the original because I had the new one, but if the old one was ok, you'll just need the 1"DD tube & upper joint. Even used the 78/79 boot between the two halves of the collapsible shaft. Will get it painted & installed soon. Need to paint the 4x4x2 box, and a few other odds & ends.
