ZF5 transmission

Postby Justin » Sat Apr 08, 2017 6:01 pm

How much longer is the ZF5/Dana 20 setup than stock? My Google-fu is failing me. I'm contemplating a decision that would add about 4" over the ZF5/adapter/Dana 20 combo and am wondering if I'm going to run into issues with a rear driveshaft that's too short. No one likes a short shaft.

According to the ZF-5 kit manual I have from BC Broncos the transmission is 29.25", the adapter is 1.4", and the D20 is 10.06" for a total of 40.71". I ran outside and measured my C4/D20 and its about 34.75" give or take a little (its tucked away so not easy to measure). I can email you the kit manual from BC Broncos if you want it, I don't think its on their site, they emailed it to me when I bought my ZF stuff. Just PM me your email if you want it.

Pmed ya, thanks! I went out and measured, looks like my overall drive shaft length would be about 7" shorter. Anyone have an idea if that would cause issues?

Is this the option your thinking of?

Nope. Considering a doubler. Diy doubler cases are about 1/2 the cost of a used atlas.

I have the short Atlas and its about 6-7 inches longer than the D20, keep in mind though that the Atlas doesn't need an adapter for the ZF-5. So far driveshafts haven't been an issue. I think Jesus_man and Gunnibronco have the 4-speed Atlas which is longer, could check and see if they had driveshaft issues.

Cool, thanks. The doubters I'm considering are 5.5" and go in place of the adapter, so there's less driveline issues. Just haven't been sure about those plus the additional length of the zf

Are you doing 203 into a 205 or d20?

Not sure yet. Looking at behemoth and Northwest fab with np241 guts.

Yes, I did run into driveshaft issues. I ended up massing the CV joint eye sockets a little to get it to drop out more. Perhaps not the best idea, but it's worked like that for many wheeling trips. I LOVE to just push my axle back and alleviate some of that angle. I can't measure mine, but I am sure Advance Adapters has specs to compare to.

Cool, thanks. Is your atlas 2 or 3 speed? If I go this route, a limiting strap on the pumpkin may be a need.
