How does an add a leaf add height? and Tip needed...

Yep, it's another amateur hour question.

I'm installing add-a-leaf's and I'm wrenching down the u-bolts to the axle and watching the steep curvature of the added leaf flatten out as I do it and it has me wondering how it adds 2.5".

My guess is that it just make it more stiff, aka harder to settle down at a lower height. Am I right on this?

Also, any tips for freeing the center pin in the leaf springs. The whole thing just spins. I had to bread the nut and that took forever. For side 2, I'd like to know your secrets.

Besides the thickness of the add-a-leaf, yes it just adds rate to the springs so they don't compress as much. Is it the best way to lift a truck, no, but it's very common.
