351W cam sensor, is this a better way?

Postby sykanr0ng » Tue Jan 30, 2018 9:42 pm

Searching for cam sensors I found this:

https://64bittuning.fwscart.com/95__Dec ... 57592.aspx

Already the right height without a spacer.
It is all new parts.

What do you think?

It's expensive. that's why no one goes that route. You can buy a spacer and a new sensor for less than $50. I came across another site that had them also but they were over $200. just not worth the cost when you can get the spacer and 4.2l sensor.

Every thread about a 351W OBD2 has a different cam sensor used.

Which ones work?

Ford 3.8l synchro with a collar and longer oil pump shaft. I’m not sure who is making the collars though anymore. I know that EFI Guy is messing around with his 3D printer and trying to come with a simple and inexpensive solution.

I’ve found the easiest ones to get to in the JY are on a Windstar with the 3.8L.

Collars?

On CB hankjr was selling them a few years ago, $125 shipped.
(One hundred twenty five dollars)

Then finding a way to clamp it down?

.... And needing to mess with getting a longer oil pump drive shaft?

More and more that one I linked to looks like a good idea.
Standard hold down, standard oil pump drive shaft.
Plug and play.

D&D72 on here had run off a bunch of collars at one point. They were 10bucks. I copied Viperwolf1 and milled a hold down groove for the stock clamp. then drilled a few holes for set screws to hold the sensor. Works great. Since I had my engine out doing the oil pump Drive shaft was simple. Just order one for a 351c. It's 1/4" longer just to make sure it is fully seated into the cam sensor.

$125 is absurd and most likely why it looks like that post had no interest. However- it doesn’t look like there are too many other options readily available.

Again- when I was doing mine, the engine was being rebuilt so the oil pump shaft wasn’t a big deal. I think like anything on these Broncos, there are many ways to skin a cat. Some of them save you money and some of them are just easier... I’ve certainly paid a little extra on things so I didn’t have to mess with the hassle.

$130 really isn’t that bad if it’s simply plug and play. It looks like if you need the other side of the pigtail it’ll cost ya another $35. If you go this route, I’m positive I have an extra pigtail you can have. Or you can just go to the pull and pay and cut one out for $5.

If I need to pay a machine shop to make a collar that is high but not really absurd.

Cut and face the material to length.
Drill the hole through the center (or drill then bore if it is an odd size).
Turn at least the small OD with a 90 degree step.
Mill a slot or turn a groove for the hold down.
Drill and tap for set screws.
Deburring.

Set up time for a one-off is not much if any shorter than for a small production run.

A 351C oil pump drive shaft is another $20 or so plus shipping.

The newest design will use the factory hold down. They will be cheap, just not $10 cheap. I need to slowly recoup 3d printer investment funds.
