Fall Colors Run

Postby Justin » Sun Sep 09, 2012 11:25 am

My wife and I would like to invite you all on a Sunday drive. On Sunday, September 16th we're planning to take the Bronco for a run over Guanella Pass to have a look at the fall colors. There haven't been many runs recently that are stock rig friendly, but this is one! Guanella Pass is rated a 1 out of 10 on Trail Damage, and is passable by all passenger vehicles. It's partly paved and the rest is gravel. Both ends are apparently potholed. We'll take I-70 up to Georgetown, Guanella Pass road over to Bailey (maxing out at 11,706 feet-bring warm clothes!), then 285 back to the metro area. The pace will be Bronco-friendly, probably 60mph. A CB is recommended but not mandatory. We'll stop someplace along Guanella Pass Road for a bring-your-own lunch. Hope you all can make it!

Meeting place: Hogback Park and Ride-Woolly Mammoth Lot (https://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8 ... 2adbdb9dbe)
Time: 10:00a, likely back to the metro area in the mid-afternoon.

More info on Guanella Pass Rd.

Love to make this one, and I think Frau Castle would enjoy it as well. However, she's working that day and the Bronco is not yet baby friendly so Kinder Castle and I will have to sit this out.

Sounds like a fun trip, and a side road past Geneva Campground (Grant side) would be fun for anyone wanting more challenge. Still passable in a stock truck too. I've seen FWD cars up the road a ways! Stocker's should be able to get all the way to the top if you're so inclined...

Jesus, I think this is the run you're referencing (Geneva Creek):

http://www.traildamage.com/trails/index.php?id=271

It looks like fun, and there appears to be a picnic area for lunch where the roads intersect. If a group of trucks wants to peel off to run this and return separately, that's 100% cool with me. My wife probably won't be game for it (not really into 4wheeling), and I'd planned this as a way to spend a day with her, so I probably won't go. Even though I really, really want to.... slap

I've posted this up to ACB and CB.com to see how many local EB folks we can get to hang out with. It'd be fun rolling down I-70 in a huge line of Broncos and Geneva is easy enough that I don't see the usual trail run problems coming up with a large group.

Justin - that's the one. There are may spots to pull over for a picnic up Geneva Road. I've never gone down Bruno Gulch Road, but there is a meadow there if you'd prefer that.

If you need to break for lunch earlier, Argentine Pass is also cool, but it's been many years since I was up there. IIRC, there was a mine at the top that had lots and lots of fools gold laying at it's mouth.

Can ya tell I'm jealous?

Looks like this is a touch early, but there'll be some great color to see.
