Yankee Hill Run 6-4-2011 (Snow and Mud run!!!)

Postby Zenzone » Sat Jun 04, 2011 6:12 pm

We had tons or fun and named Hockey Dad's (Andrew's and Dan's) Bronco "Free Bird". There is a story to it and lets just say they know how to make that thing FLY!!!! We had five Broncos toady, and 11 people. We met at the Starbucks and caravaned to the trail up behind Blackhawk. We aired everyone done and headed up the trail. It didn't take long to find some a good mud pit right in the middle of the trail. We all made it through the mud, even Justin once he got it in four low and lockers engaged (haha, we broke Justin in well this trip, so did his Bronco with no power steering. No need to go to the gym that night. his bronc is very capable with those lockers) Hockeydad's group (Dan) used a different theory in the mud, they found if you hit the mud fast enough you can hydro plain right over it. They won the award for most wheel stands, and for farthest jump into the mud pit (76 ford bronco has that video). After the Mud pits we went up a good rock hill and then headed over to Yankee Hill, but after breaking through two and three foot drifts for three quarters of a mile we decided we would turn around and head down to miners gulch which had a 7 foot drift covering it. We still had plenty of trail to ride on though. Every Bronco performed well. Crazyone's did a great job for having street tires. The day went by fast but we enjoyed every minute. We will have to go back again this summer as we didn't even get to the great hidden gem trails.

I had one break, I found it when I got home. I had a broken shock mount on the front left. Might just leave it off since I think I only need one shock instead of two.

Five Broncos in attendance

All the Bronco's did great and made FORD proud.

Todays run was fantastic! No one broke and some great opportunities to fling mud and snow (and Broncos, if you're Greg's boys). I don't have many pics, but loads were taken today. My dad was with me taking black and white photos with a vintage medium format camera. I'll post those up whenever I can get him to email them to me. Might be awhile on those. Zen, thanks for leading a great trip today. Would have been cool if we could have made it to Yankee Hill, but it was sure fun trying to get there!

Thanks Zenzone for leading us on a great trail ride.

We all had a blast. I just wish I could have stayed longer.

I especially enjoyed watching Greg's sons fully immersing themselves into this hobby. I only hope Freebird survives their enthusiasm.

Looks like a great day to play in the mud and snow. Wish I could have made it.
Freebird huh? Well I can say from watching them last weekend that they definitely will live up to that moniker. Just hope the Bronco can live up to it. LOL. Greg your gonna be busy showing those boys how to fix what they broke.

I'm a bit stiff and sore today! Power steering just got moved to the top of the mod list. I think it was fighting the wheel breaking trail.

Here is the link to all my PB pictures and videos---- http://s1104.photobucket.com/albums/h33 ... 06-3-2011/

Here is a video I made. The pictures are a little out of order, but still fun to watch.
http://youtu.be/3Ay-BRqkJbk

It was such a fun trip. I got to test out most all my toys, I used the tow strap a bunch, tree protectors, clevis hook, winch and all worked flawlessly, only recovery tool not used was the high lift. The quick tire deflators worked great and my On Board Air was really fast, the compressor was pumping air faster than we could put air in the tires. Only one bronco had a CB (crazyone) so we used walkie talkies and they worked surprisingly well. A CB will be fun though once we get one in most trucks. I learned how much easy it is to wheel with lockers, my limited slip was great but Justin's lockers pulled him through some deep snow drifts. Great idea Justin to move that power steering to the top of the to do list. Rox Crusher was like steady Eddie, I think he is the only one that didn't get stuck all day(maybe he wasn't pushing it hard enough, lol, no his truck did great). Hockeydad's group did well, it was Andrews first wheeling trip where he drove and he did well. He was starting to get the feel of the pedal as the day went on. Crazyone did well, and made it up the steep snow hill and showed us that the skinny pedal can make up for street tires.

Great day with good friends. The only question now is, where are we going to wheel next weekend?????????

That video sure reminds me of many years ago me driving my 83 Bronco and dad driving the 74 and bashing the road open to Yankee. We pulled out a few Jeeps that were stuck and dad told them to come back in about an hr and he'd have the road open for them. We did too.
Great pix and video.

Thanks guys it sure was fun. We could have made it to Yankee Hill but it would have been a bash and shovel fest so we decided we would rather wheel. It was fun to snow bash for a while though. I cant wait till the next trip. Hope we get a big group next time and you all can attend. I have a couple repairs to do this week and hopefully go again next weekend.

This is where my shock mount broke, but shock is fine. The welds held but the metal in the middle ripped. I guess there was just to much leverage with the shock only being mounted on the one side.

First off, I want to thank Zen, what great trip you planned for us. My boys and I had a ball. Free bird came home in one piece- though it took $17 at the car wash to get most of the mud off her.

Sunday was a day of rest - well deserved and much needed rest.

Snow bashing, mud splashing, rock crawling, hill climbing.... all was part of the day. I would post pictures but that would require me downloading them from my phone. Keep an eye our for video of Free Bird launching into the mud over the next few days, the video wil lnever be as awesome as the ones already posted but none the less - it will be entertaining.

And yes, I too absolutly loved watching as my son's emersed themselvs in the hobby. Far to much fun... far to much fun.

Thanks again to everyone.

Had a great time on Saturday! It was good to get out and up in the hills again. Definately need some different tires for wheelin but I am going to wait until I get my slots later in the summer (unless someone is going to Tucson and wants to bring them back for me!). I will post up some of the picks but I haven't figured out how to insert more than 5 in a post so there will be multiple posts unless Zilla can clean it up for me. Thanks again guys and I am looking forward to the next run!

Well lets go this weekend there is still plenty of snow and fun to be had up there. We were thinking you guys would have come and been out snow plows. Justin did a good job of that with his truck and lockers.

I did that mud jump act a long time ago and thought that my Bronco was gonna be a planter in the middle of nowhere for all eternity. I ended up breaking 2 winch cables & a 20k tow strap before the muck let me go.
