Chinaman Gulch July 21st Sat early morning run. Camping.

Postby landshark » Wed Jul 04, 2012 8:47 pm

Ok, I'm wanting to run Chinaman Gulch (and finally finish it) and seems like July 21st will work so I would like to put together a run if anyone wants to go.

Iam thinking early morning Saturday starting around 8:30am at the parking area bottom of chinaman gulch / carnage canyon.

the trail does get busy (and hot) thinking we start early and beat the heat and the broken down jeeps ;)

There is a camp site on the river not more than 5 miles from Chinaman Gulch that we can stage/camp at on friday night or even sat night. There are prepared sites that you can BBQ at, fish on the river and there are even toilets. Might be fun for a group to meet up and have some summer time camping fun and wheel. There are other trails in the area that we can run as well if there is enough interest. Also I do have acces to some river gear, althrough the river is VERY low.. so it would be limited to inflatable 2 person kayaks unfortunately... but we can do it.. I ran the river last weekend and it was a blast..

You can find a complete description of the trail at Trail Damange website - http://www.traildamage.com/trails/index.php?id=1.

For those that have not run the trail I would recommend you have at least 33 inch tires some kind of locker in the front or rear axle and a slight lift.

Post up lets have some fun!

Here is the camping area (ruby mountain camping and boat launch). Not huge but i would be willing to go up a day early to secure a few sites for us if there is enuogh interest!

A = camp site

B = Chinaman Gulch

More info about the camp area...

ok a little more info on camping.

I called and reserved sites #1 and #13 at Ruby Mountain Camp site for friday and saturday night.

I have a fellow fullsize bronco guy who is probably going to be pulling a small popup camper staying at #13

The maximum vehicles per reserved space is 2 however they do have general parking, you just have to pay the daily fee which i think is $7...

If anyone is planning on bringing a camper (towed or RV whatever) just let me know as Iam sleeping in my truck (or tent) and so there will be at least one 35 or 46 foot parking spot for an RV or camper if needed.. we can work it out.

We are allowed up to 6 tents per spot, so 12.. should be more than enough room for whomever wants to come out.

The river is about 40 yards from the camp spot... I will be bringing a raft and an inflatable kayak. The river is very low so not much rafting going on but might be possible. I will watch the flows.

Facilities:

22 campsites (each consists of tent pad, fire grill and table)
Four vault toilets
Two changing areas

I would probably be in for that! I will try to get my uncle in his full size solid axle bronco to go as well. He ran it bone stock on 35s so I know he is itching to get back to it, lifted, locked, geared and sas! Anyone want to play on carnage afterward? :-)

Looks like a good time, count me in for camping & wheeling, and I'll watch from the sidelines at Carnage.

Wow, I am surprised there isn't a ton more interest shown in this! Last years Chinaman trip was huge, I figured this year would be even better. I am working on getting my uncles bronco finished(rock sliders, front bumper) in preparation and a couple little things on mine but we are definitely planning on being there! Hope to see more interest soon!

I have to look at the schedule. I might be able to talk Drew into this run.

I do want to run this in my 79. I'm gonna be at the races that weekend so it may have to be later.

Gents, I have suddenly recalled that my lovely wife and I have plans for Saturday evening, plans that were actually postponed for our memorial weekend event. So I think that it is best if I bow out on this trip.

Our plans do not include Drew, he would like to come up, wheel and camp with you all if you don't mind having a semi responsible 16 yr old tag along

trying to get the Bronco back on the road, she ate another alternator.
Not sure why?
but I have another new one and I ordered up a larger pulley to hopefully get it to stop slipping the belt(dont know if that is why they are going south or not) if I can get the pulley in time and get it back together and do a couple other things we may try and make the run, I would like to camp but still havent got a trailer yet to haul the needed goods for the fam of 4 to camp.
just time and money.

I am still planning on making it but I won't be camping. I will be towing my bronco down early Saturday morning. I will try to get there by 8:30 but I may be a touch late.

sounds good. Made it early to beat the crowds... hopefully.. the trail tends to get crowded from time to time.. so we really want to try and get going at 8:30. I think there might be a Nissan group running around the valley that weekend as well.

I will try to find out the approximate time they are hitting up CG and make sure we beat them.

EDIT- they start at 9am and 10am.. so we need to be on the trail by 8:30...

jts - I'll help you out, can I also use your monster table saw? I have two 10 foot cuts I need to make, let me know when you're going to work on it, I'm off work this week so I'm flexible.

hockey - I'll look after your boy, and by look after I mean I'll pull him up any tough sections or lend him some duct tape.

brian - can I lend a hand or my trailer to you? I'm only running the bronco since I'll likely be solo for this one. I have the bronco trailer or a small 4x8 HF utility trailer to lend. Either of them pull nicely behind mine, and we could pop the top off the bronco trailer and it would cut down on the wind resistance if that's the one you want to use.

Might take you up on one of those offers. still chatting it over with the Mrs.
Also need to weld on my trac bar riser(slacker) and I was planning to gut the insides of my fenders to get rid of some rub. I will let you know.

Kinder, yes you can come and use the table saw any day this week, I will be working from home all week. As for the Bronco I'm not sure where to start so maybe you can light a fire under my a$$. PM me or give me a call.

EDIT-- I'm out on this one, to many domestic plans.

Considering a small side trip / trail / back country camping thing either before (Thursday night) or after (Saturday night) running Chinaman Gulch on Saturday morning. Thinking of linking up a couple of pass roads and 2-3 trails to do an up and over the continental divide (Handcart - Webster - Saint Johns - Mid / North Fork - Georgia) off of 285. Anyone else interested?

ok guys we have a decent group going so far.

Two early broncos and 2.5 fullsize broncos ;)

should be fun. If anyone else wants to join up we will be leaving the parking lot at the bottom of the trail at 8:30 on the nose.. so if you miss us catch up! if you get there after 9am your going to be behind a LARGE group of Toyotas...

See you campers tomorrow. We should be there around 7pm.
