Boreas Pass, even little Broncos can make it!

Postby Kinder » Mon Mar 05, 2018 8:03 pm

Starting some initial planning to run Boreas Pass, it's basically a bumpy dirt road between Como and Breckenridge. Based on the past two years of Bushducks reports it's open by mid June so I'm thinking June 10th or 24th, both Sundays with no holidays preceding or after those dates. The idea for this is that my '66 can make it easily up 285 to the trailhead, not so easy on I-70 with a straight 6. Camping is available on either side of the pass, so you could camp Sat night or Sun night if you are so inclined, depending on your days off. If you don't want to go to Breckenridge and run CO Hwy 9 to FairPlay to get home, then just head back out towards Como. So check your calendars and mark the dates before your significant other fills it up.

My Bronco should be dialed by June. I'm interested in doing this for sure as a fellow '66, 6 cylinder driver. I'll mark my calendar!

If you want to make a weekend trip our cabin is just south of como a few miles. could be a good place to hang out and camp. Plenty of land for tents and campers.

There is also a nice easy road that goes up and over on the west side that goes by Selkirk campground. Been up there elk hunting a few times.

I could be interested-- sounds like it is not too tough of a trek and if Rob has a spot to drop a pop-up then it would be a fun little weekend with the pop-up in tow.

Interested for either date. Would love to camp, but a day trip wouldn't be out of the question either.

Edit: Won't the annual swap meet fall between those weekends?

That camper makes your Bronco looks small, ha. I’m wondering if the ‘66 can pull my 1970 Starcraft pup up Red Feather & and Kenosha, doubtful. I already have to down shift just driving around Parker!

I'm in. I'll camp in Breck! I have room for a few more "campers" if you are interested.

Also -- if you take Boreas to Breck from 285 (Como), you could always take Georgia Pass to get you back to 285. It makes a nice loop and It's a wonderful little trail. I did it in the Roadster last summer, so nothing too tough -- but some nice views and better than backtracking Boreas. I've got the GPS files if anyone wants them. Just a thought.

Edit 2 - I love that camper, but it's no bueno for the Georgia Pass return option.

Like Rob said our cabin is about 15 miles off 285 but a great place to camp and spend some time having a brew or two. That road up past Selkirk campground is a beautiful drive as well. Boreas Pass is a nice drive and so is the one up the back side of Georgia Pass.

Fire ban was just lifted but will be evaluated on a weather basis. Got a lot of moisture the last weekend but dry wind and warm temps will make it more fire prone but thats ok because I have a propane fire pit JIC.

So park county is still under a fire ban.

But with that being said I'll still be at the cabin Friday after work. Pm prior to Thursday if you want directions. I will be up there all weekend. Whether this run happens or not.
