Few items I am looking to collect

Postby Eck » Tue May 10, 2016 5:17 pm

I will be starting my search this summer for next winter's project. I will be changing the heads on my 351W from the stock heads to some GT40 heads. If you have any you are looking to unload or see some at a junkyard-- let me know. I am in no hurry so will be patient for the 40 not P heads.

I am also in need of a Dana 20 rear output shaft/housing. Would like to carry one as a trail spare. So if you upgraded your rear output shaft and have a stock you are looking to unload, please let me know.

Thank you!

Curious why you don't want the P heads? You may have a slightly easier time finding some cheap and your Hut headers should fit them fine.

I mostly don't want to deal with torching any spark plug boots. Since I'm in no hurry, I figure I can be choosy for the time being.

Also for the price on machine work and all you may just look into aftermarket.

I admittedly don't know a whole lot about heads and so I'm curious. What machine work needs to be done to GT40 heads other than drilling out the bolt holes and maybe having them cleaned up?

What are other aftermarket solutions you consider in the same price range as the GT40 with said machine work?

I thought the whole nostalgia of the GT40 heads were that they were pretty close to just plug and play from a junk yard making them an economical improvement?

If they're in good shape very little machine work may be needed. I've got about $200 into mine, but if they'd needed a rebuild it'd be several hundred more dollars. You can also have them milled down to increase compression, which can be spendy. I recently heard about a place that does it for $200ish.

Any key things to look for to help determine condition? Where did you have yours done Justin?

Saw that but I only need heads not the whole motor. I'll most likely be scouring the junkyards for a decent pair.

If it needs new valves and guides with all the machine work you will be getting lose to 1k. In the end even the bottom of the line edelbrock e street heads flow better than gt40's. I paid $1023 for mine. Also the gt40's have large chambers on them(64cc) and most factory sbf heads on 351's were 60cc's. So unless you mill them down you will lose some compression. I just spent a good amount of time looking into this. Another option is trick flow makes heads that are already setup for flat tappet cams. Oh and that being said gt40's will need a spring change for a flat tappet cam. roller cams use different spring specs than a flat tappet cam.

I guess I better start doing some homework to determine my best option. I would imagine I can reuse the springs on my stock heads on the GT40's. Is there a way to legitimately tell whether a set of heads need major machine work?

Phil ran some computer Dyno numbers for me and with a change to GT40 heads and a different cam, I could see an increase in HP of about 30 throughout just by changing to those 2 things.

you wont know if they need work unless you tear them down. you'll want to look at the valve seats and valves to make sure they are not pitted. Make sure the guides are tight.

Few items I am looking to collect

You should pull the gt40 heads take them to a good machine shop and ask they will tell you what they need. If you don't do anything to them you can flip them for profit and roll them into aftermarket.

It's just a pain to pull them out of the junk yard.
