I wrote up the article I posted. Total cost was about $225. Any particular reason why you're set on heims?

Heims really suck on the street. Do the set-up justin has. I also run that on my 79 and am happy with it.

What makes you think heims suck on the street? I ran them for 4 years on my last, daily driven/weekend warrior bronco and I run them in my rear suspension and steering on my current bronco. I have never had a failure or even looseness in one! They are very durable, look good, easy to carry spares for, etc. The road feel is better imo too.

Don't mean to stirpot but I also thought heims are more dangerous in a street application. My understanding is that a TRE does not fail the same way a heim does. Is this not true?

Both can fail the same ways, catastrophic or wear. The load ratings on a tre are actually less than a good quality rod end though. Typically a worn rod end goes from worn to catastrophic failure more quickly that a tre does due to design. As long as you keep an eye on either set up you will be fine. As with anything, common maintenance will in a long way. From my experience, those that say the worst things about rod ends don't have any personal experience with them and may have only seen something somewhere that was mistreated or abused and formed their opinion from that. If rod ends were more prone to failure why do the top end dragster, rock crawlers and other extreme performance vehicles use them?

Just my experience with a dodge. The heims are a horrible feel to me for street driving. And not to mention the knuckles. Not having a taper seat wears them out. would be great if they were double shear mounts. But being a single shear they will oblong the hole and wobble around.

i 100% agree with crawlercreation , i have run rod ends / heim joints on trac bar all steering comp ,rear traction bar , hyd assit ram, throttle cable .ect ,just to name a few spots that they live on Molley . and she has good road maners and very responsive steering . none of the mounting holes have worn out , but just like everything else rod ends will wear out if you use and abuse them ! p.s. aircraft also use rod ends . my 2-1/2 cents
66 Bronco (Molley) injected 418 stroker on juice, klune v ,4 speed atlas hi 9 35 spline air lockers front & rear, rcv axles. 37'' red krawlers. Four other sets of tires for ice racing and dirt drags. 290lbs of welding wire.

I like heims just fine if they're quality. I just didn't want to go that way due to availability. I can get a GM rod end anywhere in BFE for $25. Granted, it probably won't be the Moogs I'm running, but good luck finding a heim. I also like the fact that I can grease them and at least flush some of the gunk out.

I can onLy say this on the subject, a tie rod end will give you more range of motion than a standard heim joint,
