Need a motor!

Postby Backcountryrenegade » Tue Apr 17, 2018 4:16 pm

OK- Dana says my 302 in my 75 is done. I need a motor. 75, 302, C4. I don't have the garage tools or space, much less the experience to swap a motor so looking for ideas. I don't have a coyote budget- more like a coors light budget. Truck is a driver, camping rig, occasional tower. Open to all options- would like to see if I can afford a 351 or 5.0 swap but beggars can't be choosers. Thanks!

Looks like there are now two of you needing budget motor swaps and it sounds like there may be 2 5.0 motors in the club available for inexpensive purchases. Sounds like it could be the making of a fun engine swap club weekend.

I know there are a few of us leaving for Baja Mexico in a few weeks so depending on urgency, I’d be happy to help out after mid May.

If we could get a location, a couple trailers (if not currently driveable) and about 6-8 guys, we could get both done in a weekend.

Hey all! Thanks again for the offer to help swap these motors! I am picking up a 351W tomorrow morning early in Loveland. I'd like to see about coordinating an install with whomever is able to help. This weekend would be ideal but it's kind of short notice so if that's not possible I completely understand. We need a location with tools, cherry picker, etc. and hands to do the wrenching. Is anybody up for this weekend, and does anybody have a location? I've never done this so I'm anxious to learn! Thanks!!!

My number is 303-929-6717

I've got a new tank and fitech on order- we'd be pulling the 302 out, swapping over whatever is necessary (Front Dress?) and dropping the 351 in. I'll be doing the Fitech/tank when it shows. That I think I can handle. If anybody has a shopping list of things you know I'll need to bring please shout out- don't want to waste anybody's time not being prepared! Thanks!

Incidentally I've got a 1 inch Body Lift to put on it as well- is that do-able at the same time? I'm guessing not but I've never done one before.

Me personally wouldn't be able to help this weekend due to getting ready for Moab. I don't have a cherry picker either. The body lift is simple depending on how old and rusted the bolts are. I did mine in the driveway used two floor Jack's and lots of sawzall blade's. Took a day and a half. Being the first time ever installing one. Once again more than happy to help but would have to be after the 7th of May.

No worries! I’m jealous- haven’t been back to Moab in years. How’d you lift the body evenly?

I put one Jack under each rocker with 2x4 between Jack and rocker. Worked out well. I put Jack stand's in front and rear for a safety but didn't need them. Didn't wobble and lined back up when I set it back down. Hardest part were the original bolt's holding it on.

Sweet. Do the original rubber mounts come out easily? How’d you get the bolts out after sawzall?

I’m happy to help as well but will be getting ready to go to Baja this weekend (as is a number of us). My guess is you’d get a lot more help after the middle of May.

Also- are you planning on trailering your rig to wherever this swap happens? Changing to a 351W requires a number of additional things all depending on what upgrades you’re going with. It most likely will not be driveable in a weekend.
