I know it is going to be something stupid and simple that is screwing this up. That's the way it always is with my projects.

Too bad I knocked the studs out of my old hub. I could be driving it while I figure this crap out.

Yeah, I'm an idiot. I did wind up with a wrong part, but one I never thought to check.

Below you see two backing plates. The one on the left is from my first attempt at spindle pulling. Turned out to be a late 76/77 truck and had the larger diameter spindles on it. The one on the right is from my second day at the salvage yard. Early 76 K10 with the appropriate sized spindles. Notice a difference?



Turns out the backing plates are shaped differently. Below you'll see the distance between the flange and the back side of the plate. A scoch short of 2" if my tape isn't lying. This is the late 76/77 plate.



And here is the early 76 plate. Not only is the distance a little larger, the area around the point where the caliper mounts is actually shaped differently.

Oh man I can't believe that's what it was. Don't worry I sold have been in the same boat. I never would have thunk it. So you got the right ones now?

Yup. When I pulled spindles I pulled plates too. If I had bought them separately they would have charged me for each piece. Figured someone would be able to use the extra set of plates. Oh well. Big spindles go back to the yard. Wrong backing plates become steel pistol targets. Once I take all the edges off and fabricate a hanger for them.
